Note: I know this is a bit basic, but I know it is what I would have wanted 3 months ago.
Lately, I've been getting into automation and accessibility with my phone. While I am definitely not the first one to use this, I think that I am evidence that someone with no coding knowledge can improve their life significantly when it comes to their phone and computer. The thing that I think has affected me the most is AdBlock.
Now, most of you are (hopefully) using an extension in your desktop browser, like uBlock Origin or AdGuard, but what you might not know is that you can actually block ads across your entire network using a service called AdGuard Home. (There are also alternatives, such as pi-hole, but let's focus on AdGuard)
All you need is a RaspberryPi, (almost any version works, works, and you can find a RasberryPi Zero for as little as $5), and about 10-30 minutes, depending on your proficiency with Linux. I'm not going to write a tutorial here, but you can find one here, or google "AdGuard raspberry pi."
What this does is that it blocks ads on your entire network, so whether you are on your phone or in an app, the ads will (probably) be disabled. The drawbacks of this are that not all ads are blocked (youtube is finicky,) and it requires a little common sense when it comes to computers. Luckily, there's another way...
Bringing us to Alternative Social Media Apps. There are currently many different apps for different social media platforms, almost all of which feature ad-blocking. Here are the ones that I'm currently using:
Note: You will need to uninstall APKs for some of these apps to work. If you don't know how to do that, check this article out.
Youtube: Vanced
Blocks ads, skip sponsors using SponsorBlock, download videos, and get AMOLED dark mode, all for free. They also have a youtube music app, also with no ads, and also for free.
Note on vanced: Since it is so popular, many fake websites claim to have downloads. ONLY DOWNLOAD VANCED FROM https://vancedapp.com/
Facebook: Swipe for Facebook
A clean looking Facebook interface, with every feature of the main Facebook app, plus messenger, dark mode, and Ad Blocking (for an additional one-time fee), it is my personal Facebook app, and definitely worth the $5 or so to block sponsored posts.
Twitter: Owly for Twitter
While I personally use Flamingo (an app that is now removed from the app store due to Twitter's token limit), I have tried Owly and can say that it is definitely one of the best Twitter apps. They have a great looking UI, Ad blocking, Filters, video downloading, and tons more. They do have a $3 fee to access most of the features, but again, it's definitely worth it, plus you can always get a refund if you don't like it.
Reddit: Relay for Reddit
Reddit is a big one, and while Apollo is still my all-time favorite Reddit app, it's only available on IOS, so I use Relay. It has Ad Blocking, a WAY better interface and UI than the official Reddit app, and AMOLED Dark Mode. You can also scrub through videos, and it's just a generally better app than the normal one. If you like it, you can support the developer with the pro version (although there are no large differences between the pro and free versions.)
Instagram: Insta aero A good looking Instagram app with Ad Blocking, photo scaling, and AMOLED dark mode. Plus much more. Please only download from https://aeroinsta.com/
In general, using AdGuard and Alternative Apps are a great way to save money and not have to deal with CONSTANT ADS all around us. I hope this helps some people!

I don't scroll through here that often, so I don't know the general consensus on Apple products here, so forgive me if I'm not saying anything new or if I'm deviating too much from the public opinion here I guess.
So as funny as it is to see iOS introduce old Android features as "new" year after year, it does make switching more of an option to me honestly. As a MacBook Pro user, I started out completely ignoring the idea of getting an iPhone to pair with my laptop better, I felt iPhones were just too limiting. But the two OS's have really started to become much more similar than before in terms of general, everyday feature set.
I don't feel like I'd miss much switching from my S10e to an iPhone now. I'd only miss freely downloading apks, YouTube Vanced (audio with the screen off for free), and GCam. But besides that, with great cameras, fast speed, grouped notifications, an app drawer, widgets, fluid animations, and so on, iOS now feels like Android with way less sacrifice than ever before. Hell, if I wanted I could get an iPhone X for less than the price of a new flagship Android and get more software updates and support than the usual Android phones and basically the same performance.
And I'm sure now, with Android refining design, speed, and features, more iOS users are thinking Android feels like iOS with more options.
I don't know why I'm making this post exactly, I think I'm just kinda happy to see the two OS's becoming mature and optimized enough that I, a person who's never owned an iPhone, can actually see myself switching over for once.

Well for people who play DnD online 5etools is probably a well know resource. If you dont know it, it basically has every information that the official material offers to quickly look up. Super handy and I am glad that they made a phone version. Imo it could be further optimized but I am just happy that I have it as a standalone app.

Even though this app is neither the best looking nor the most feature rich reddit reader, it is still my main reddit app. Over the time I basically used most of the common reddit apps and even paid for them. But in the end I always returned to Baconreader. IMO the seamless scrolling between post and comments combine with the swiping makes it the best to use app. I am aware that sync introduced swipe mode for subs (yay) but scrolling to comments is still super tedious.

This is a really cool app and I use it a ton. Basically it shows you all research papers that were published in a particular journal. You can customize which journals you want to see and from which fields. Then you can link your Uni account or some other way of authorization to check if you have access to the paper you want to read. It is really good for me because I read a lot of papers out of my own field of studies. This is also where define comes into play because I read a lot outside of my field of study there are often words or concepts unknown for me so it is great to quickly look them up to help further my understanding of the concepts.

Here is Part 1 - this contains lots of useful tips so check this one out first if you haven't already.
Remember to save this thread and Part 1 as I often update and add more to it.
This is Part 2 of the big thread of pro tips and tricks that you all saw 3 weeks ago! Once again, this is not really about themes and visual customizations, it's more about using your device thoroughly and getting the most out of it with stock settings plus some very useful apps. You may know a lot of these tips as some are quite simple, but those ones are meant for new Samsung/Android users :) You may think they're obvious, but many people don't check out a lot of settings. Also, some of these aren't new features, it's more so recommending a way to use the phone. Some of these require you to use specific apps, such as Chrome, YouTube Vanced, Spotify, etc.
Now take some time and go through these tips, hope it helps.
1) On-Screen Lock Button via One Hand Operation + (OHO+)
Download OHO+ from the Galaxy Store if you haven't already got it. The main functionality of OHO+ is to use the back/home/recents button from the edge. But another cool thing you can do is lock your phone using the edge. In OHO+, click on your handle (left handle or right handle), then turn on "Long Swipe", then set the Straight left (or right) option to "Screen off". Now, wherever you are, you can lock the phone by swiping left (or right) from the edge and holding it. This removes the need for the SoftKey Edge panel, which was tip (12) in Part 1.
My OHO+ setup is as follows: Swipe left = back, Swipe Diagonal Up = Recents, Swipe Diagonal Down = Home, Swipe left HOLD = Screen Off / Lock,
2) Enable Dark Mode on Chrome, and Dark Web Contents (like Samsung Internet with Night Mode)
Go to Chrome and type "chrome://flags" to access the flags menu. If your version is 74 or above (you can see it in the top right of this page), then you can do this. Search "dark" and you'll find two options. The UI dark mode will change the Chrome user interface to dark colours, and the web contents dark mode will try to darken all web pages. Switch these to "Enabled" rather than "Default" for whichever one you want. In my experience, the web contents hasn't been perfected yet, but the Dark UI is decent.
3) Disable notifications that annoy you, even persistent sticky ones
If you find that you always get a particular notification that you don't need or don't want to see, instead of swiping it away every time, you can permanently disable it. When you get the notification, then hold on it and it will take you to that app's notifications menu, and it will flash on that particular notification type so watch out for it. There, you can turn it off, and if you click on the text of that notification, you can customize its sound and vibrations. For the persistent sticky notifications, sometimes when you hold on it, it will instead bring up three options, one of which is "Minimize". Clicking on that should turn it off. You may have to press a couple of more things depending on how "sticky" the notification is. You can't disable system built-in notifications like phone calls.
4) Drag down on notifications to get special options
Most people know this, but those new to Android may not. You can drag down on most notifications to read more of it, and on a message notification, usually dragging down on it brings a quick "reply" button. If you click that, you can reply without having to open the conversation on the app. It's quite convenient. For other apps, there are other special options sometimes when you drag down on the notification.
5) Swipe controls for brightness and sound using YouTube Vanced
If you use YouTube Vanced which was tip (29) in Part 1, then you can do this. Click on your profile pic on the top right > Settings > Vanced settings > Swipe controls > Turn ON for Brightness and Volume. I didn't touch the Swipe threshold, but I set the Swipe padding (top) to 120. Now go into a video, and you can swipe the left half of your screen up and down for Brightness, and right half of the screen for volume. The Swipe threshold is to stop accidental triggers when you pull down the notification bar from the edge while watching a video in landscape mode. If you are still getting accidental swipes when trying to pull down the notification tray / quick toggles while in landscape, then make then Swipe threshold higher.
6) Download Spotify (or other streaming music app) songs to the phone's storage + set to Very High quality
I like to download all my songs from Spotify onto my phone's local storage since I have so much free space. The benefit is that you don't use the internet to stream your music (unless it is a song outside your library), so this saves great battery since you're not streaming, and overall, having the songs available on the phone locally is awesome. I use Spotify so I'll give the instructions for that. Go to Spotify > Settings, scroll down until you see Music Quality. Choose which quality you want for Download - I set mine to Very High since I don't care how much space it uses. Then go to Your Library tab > Liked songs > and turn the Downloaded songs toggle ON. Spotify will slowly download your entire set of songs onto the phone. I currently have 30GB of Spotify music saved to my phone and have had no issues at all. All downloaded songs will have a green arrow on it.
NOTE: You can save Spotify songs to an SD card but I have had issues with this in the past, where the storage suddenly switches to the Phone local storage and everything starts downloading again. So use the SD card as a save location with caution. The phone storage never has problems so I stick to that now.
7) Integrate local MP3s onto Spotify (songs that don't exist on Spotify)!
If you have a set of MP3 files on your computer that you wish were available on Spotify, you can now actually add them to your Spotify on your phone! You'll need a PC and a Wi-Fi connection for this.
On your Spotify on PC:
Put all the MP3 files you want into a folder - this folder will be synced to Spotify. Now go to the Settings of your Spotify on the PC. Turn ON "Show Local Files". Under "Show songs from", I recommend turning off everything and clicking "Add a source", then adding that specific folder of MP3s. Now all of your local MP3s will be shown on a section called Local Files on the left. Now, you have to create a playlist, and call it "LOCAL" or whatever you wish. Then click on the Local Files section, hit Ctrl+A to choose all, and drag all of the songs to the playlist you just created, which I called "LOCAL". Now go into that "LOCAL" playlist, and turn ON the Downloaded button (on the right side) and it should go green.
On your Spotify app on the S10:
Make sure you're on the same Wi-Fi as your PC (or the PC can be wired into the same connection too). Close Spotify and re-open it so that the new playlist "LOCAL" shows up, go into it and all the songs should be grey. Turn ON the "Downloaded" button. Now Spotify will download all your local MP3 files as long as you're on the same internet connection as the PC. Once they have all finished downloading, they will all have green arrows on them. Now you can listen to these MP3s wherever you are. So whenever you want to listen to a song that is in your local MP3s, you'll have to go to that "LOCAL" playlist on your phone. I think you can add it to your normal spotify library which is called Liked Songs now, but I haven't tried it as I had issues before. So I have all my custom MP3s in its own playlist now, which works like a charm.
8) Keep statistics for all your music listening via last.fm
Go to last.fm on the internet and make an account, then on that website once logged in, go to Settings > Applications > and connect your Spotify account into "Spotify Scrobbling". Now every song you listen to is recorded, and you can see your statistics for your top songs, artists, albums, etc. All you do is log in to last.fm and see your profile - it's very cool :) Records songs played from phone and PC and wherever else. I bookmarked it to Chrome so I can check it out sometimes.
Alternatively, for really quick Spotify statistics, go here. You'll need to login to Spotify for it to work, and the benefit is that it grabs data since the start of your Spotify account, where as last fm gets data from when you make the account onwards.
9) Clipboard History and Clipboard Edge (hot tip!)
If you didn't know, your phone stores a full clipboard history, it doesn't just save the last thing that was copied. I use the stock Samsung Keyboard so for those with Gboard and other ones, I don't know where the button is. First, you need to enable the Keyboard Toolbar: Go to your phone's Settings > General management > Language and input > On-screen keyboard > Samsung Keyboard > Keyboard Layout and feedback > turn ON Keyboard toolbar. Now open up the keyboard in any app, click the button at the top left of the keyboard to toggle to the icons, click the icon that looks like a "save" icon or a file, this is the clipboard. You may have to click the three dots on the right to find the icon. The clipboard saves all copied text and images.
Hot tip - There is an edge panel for the clipboard. Go to your edge display, click the settings cog on the bottom left, then enable the Clipboard Edge. Now you can access your clipboard on the edge. Really convenient.
10) Smart Select edge panel for quick cropped-screenshots, GIFs, pin-to-screen
Go to your edge panel and click the settings cog on the bottom left, then enable Smart Select edge panel. The top icon on this panel is the quick-crop, sometimes I prefer this over the normal screenshot, as it immediately goes into the crop window so I can choose which part of the screen to capture. Also you can make GIFs from here, try it out on YouTube videos or something, it's quite cool.
One really useful feature here is the bottom button of the 4 in Smart Select, which is Pin to Screen. You can click this to pin a certain area to the screen, so you can go into other apps and keep that part pinned. Really useful in some situations if you need to remember something across apps, but can't copy it.
11) Show Spotify (or other) music player inside Google Maps navigation
Go to Google Maps > Swipe from the left > Click Settings > Navigation settings > Turn ON "Show media playback controls", set Default media app to Spotify (or other music player). Then restart the app, now every time you go into a navigation, Spotify will show up. If you want to remove any persistent notification that comes up, use tip (3).
12) Diagnostic testing for sensors, hardware, screen, etc.
Dial *#0*# and a board of options will come up, and you can test different functions of the phone.
WARNING: Only use this if something to do with sensors or hardware is not working for you, for example, I used it when I ran my S9 through water and needed to test the front and bottom speakers. Also be warned that it takes a while to get out of this menu for some reason - I had to button mash the home and back button to get out of here, but eventually it will definitely get out of there.
13) Turn on Developer options
This is a given for most experienced Android users, but some of you may not know it. Warning - only do things in here that you know well, and don't mess around here. This will be used in a few more of my tips shown below.
Settings > About Phone > Software information > keep tapping "Build number" until it tells you that you've unlocked Developer options.
14) Use high quality bluetooth codecs if your bluetooth headphones are compatible
If your headphones support high quality codecs like LDAC (Sony) or APTX, then this is for you. While your headphones are connected, go to developer options (13), then scroll down to "Bluetooth audio codec" and switch it to the best codec that your headphones support (research it). You can also fiddle with the other bluetooth settings here if you understand them. I use the Sony WH-1000XM3 so I use the LDAC codec and it is amazing. Once you have chosen your codec, then you can go into the normal bluetooth settings menu, click the cog/wheel of the connected bluetooth device, and a toggle showing your chosen codec should appear, confirming that it is indeed being used.
NOTE: For the Galaxy Buds, the general consensus is that Default is the best codec so don't play around with this if you have the buds - they are made for the S10 anyway.
15) Use the Bixby button as a toggle between "Sound" and "Vibrate" modes, like the iPhone switch
You will need to install BxActions and enable Full Remapping, so follow tip (22) in Part 1. Once you've done that, go into BxActions > Bixbi button > for both "Single press" options on Standard action and Lockscreen, set it to "Sound mode iOS (Sound, vibrate)" or the (Sound, vibrate, silent) whichever you prefer. You can also do many other things with BxActions such as Flashlight, Google Assistant, and so on.
NOTE: When you switch to "Sound" mode, it plays a little sound tone. When you switch to "Vibrate" mode, it vibrates. I guess it is nice to know which mode you're in.
16) Save battery by putting certain apps to sleep
Settings > Device Care > Battery > (3 dots) > Settings > Sleeping Apps. Now, add apps which you 1) Don't need notifications from, and 2) Don't use frequently. If you have issues with a particular app after adding it to this, then take it off.
17) Utilize the Navigation Bar toggle in the swipe down quick toggles when needed
This isn't really a tip, but if you use the Nav Bar (3 buttons at the bottom), then you might find that when you watch some videos on Chrome or some other apps, even when you go full screen landscape, the Nav Bar will persist onto the side, often with a white colour. Just swipe down your quick toggles and click the Navigation Bar toggle - make sure Gesture Hints are disabled so that the thin lines don't show up. You can long press the Nav Bar toggle to turn it off. This isn't a great solution, but it's the best I could find if you use the Nav Bar.
18) Quick weather in Lockscreen
Settings > Lock screen > FaceWidgets > turn ON weather. This uses the stock Samsung weather app. Now when you're on the lockscreen, just swipe left/right from the clock and the weather will appear (along with any other FaceWidgets you have). It's a quick way to look at the weather without unlocking the phone.
19) Save battery by turning off Sync options that you don't need + Samsung Cloud
Settings > Accounts and backup > Accounts. Here you'll find all the accounts that are constantly being synced, from all apps. You can click through each of them to see what is enabled and what is disabled, and turn things on and off based on what you don't need. For example in the Google account. If you go back one level to Settings > Accounts and backup, you can go to Samsung Cloud to see what is being backed up to the Samsung servers. Click the 3 dots > Settings > Sync and auto backup settings > turn OFF anything you don't want synced. Also switch to the Auto Back up tab. I have turned everything off as I prefer doing backups only when I feel like it, as a one-off backup.
Another tip which I mentioned before is that if you use Outlook, you can turn off sync in your quick toggles and set a bixby routine to turn sync on only when the phone is charging - see tip (21) in Part 1.
20) Don't get into the habit of "closing all apps" in the recents/multitasking screen
I know a lot of people who have a habit of always clearing all the apps. The S10 has 8GB ram (6GB for some S10Es and 12GB for the 1TB S10+ model). This is a LOT of RAM and also, on Android, the more RAM utilized, the better. Always keep all of your apps open in the multitasking menu - it actually saves battery as when you open an app, it is already in the RAM and so it doesn't have to reload from scratch which saves battery and also provides better performance. I only close one particular app if it is bugging out. Only when the phone is completely frozen or something (very rare), then you can try "closing all apps".
21) Disabling lots of apps and system functions with Package DisableAdHell3/ADB Commands can hurt battery
If you use Package DisableAdHell/ADB Commands to disable a lot of apps including Samsung system things, sometimes it can really hurt your battery performance, which is the opposite of what you were trying to do. What happens is that the phone is repeatedly searching for a funcionality that it can't find, resulting in higher battery use, even though you won't know it. I've had this same experience on the S9 and S7 too. So these days, I stay away from disabling apps in that way.
I only go to Settings > Apps, and disable some apps which are duplicates and keep it at that (e.g. YouTube, Gmail, Google Music, etc). My battery seems to be fine now.
22) Swipe right and left for Back and Forward gestures in Chrome
Go to Chrome, go to "Chrome://flags", then search "Overscroll history navigation". Set it to Enabled, relaunch Chrome. Now you can swipe right for Back and left for forward. Quite useful especially for one handed use.
23) In-built Caller ID from Hiya - see who's calling you before you pick up!
Go to the Phone app > (3 dots) > Settings > Turn ON "Caller ID and spam protection". Click on the text of it to get a description. Essentially, there is an extensive directory on Hiya's database, and it identifies Spam callers for you, and it also sometimes identifies people's or business' names. It works when you receive a call or when you dial a number. It's nice to have some confirmation of who you're calling / who's calling you.
NOTE: Seems like most US-carrier models such as Verizon don't have this option, possibly due to potential conflicts with network policies.
24) Check out and customize the "Doze" buckets for standby status of apps
Android has a built-in feature called Doze that turns apps into standby based on usage patterns. To see what category Android has put your apps into, go to Settings > Developer options (see tip (13) to enable this). Scroll down to "Standby apps" and click on it. You'll find apps are put into four states - FREQUENT, ACTIVE, WORKING_SET > RARE. You can also click on apps and change their state based on your preference. You can't do it to some System apps so they show as EXEMPTED.
25) Turn Scene Optimizer off on the Camera for a more natural colour profile which you may like
By default, Scene Optimizer is ON in the Camera - this is where AI is used to detect what the image is, and a colour and HDR profile is added onto the picture. This usually results in stunning shots but sometimes the saturation is overblown. You can turn if OFF and test out if you like the pictures better. While in the camera view, click the button on the bottom right of the camera view (it is in line with the triple lens buttons) - this is the icon that changes based on what you're looking at. I find myself turning it off 50% of the time for a more natural shot, but Scene Optimizer is still great so don't turn it off permanently.
26) Show all of your notification icons rather than the dots after 3 notifications
Swipe the quick toggles down completely (so swipe down twice) > (3 dots) > Status bar. Turn "all notifications" on, rather than "3 recent notifications". Also, I turned off the battery percentage since I'm quite happy with the battery and don't need to constantly monitor it. I prefer the look in this setup.
27) Try using a pattern rather than pin code - it's way faster
Other than face recognition and fingerprint, sometimes we need to put in our manual method. I find the pattern to be way faster than putting in a PIN code, however do note that it is overall less secure. To change it, go to Settings > Lock screen > Screen lock type. Change the PIN to Pattern and setup a pattern that's unique but also easy to swipe. Try it out and see if you like it.
You can disable the pattern from being shown while you unlock the phone: Settings > Lock screen > Secure lock settings > Turn OFF Make Pattern Visible. Now when you swipe the pattern it remains invisible.
28) Turn off "Lift to wake" to stop the screen from accidentally turning on a lot
If you always find your screen turning on when you move it around, it's because of this. Settings > Advanced Features > Motions and gestures > turn OFF "Lift to wake".
29) Swipe down from anywhere on the home screen to bring up the quick toggles
Settings > Display > Home Screen > turn ON "Quick-open notification panel". Now go to your home screen and swipe down from anywhere to bring up the toggles, really useful for one handed use.
NOTE: Some custom launchers will not support this feature as they have another screen that comes up when you swipe down, e.g. a search bar.
30) Get amazing sound performance - Dolby Atmos, Adapt Sound, UHQ Upscaler
Settings > Sounds and vibration > Advanced sound settings > Sound quality and effects.
Turn on Dolby Atmos - this gives you a richer sound profile and everything becomes louder and more vibrant. I usually have my Dolby Atmos set to "Auto" but "Music" is good too. Don't listen to the nit-picky battery folk who say Dolby Atmos uses more battery - it really doesn't. I've left mine on permanently and it's fine.
If you use headphones/earphones, both wired or wireless, setup Adapt Sound in this menu while you are wearing the headphones. What this does is a "beep test" at a whole range of frequencies and you indicate which frequencies you can hear and which you can't hear. Then it amplifies the frequencies you can't hear so it's like your own customized sound profile for your own ears.
If you use wired headphones/earphones through the headphone jack (e.g. the AKG ones you get in the box), then while they're plugged in, you'll see UHQ Upscaler. Turn it on and set it to bit upscale. You can test out the bit and bandwidth settings, but I think it's better on the bit upscale only.
31) Uninstall or Disable duplicate apps you don't need
Settings > Apps > [Choose App] > Uninstall or Disable (whichever is available).
If you use Outlook, disable/uninstall Samsung Email, Gmail, etc. If you use Spotify, disable Google Play Music. If you use Dropbox, disable One Drive (however don't disable Google Drive as this controls the "Copy" function in share menus sometimes... stupid I know). If you use the default Samsung Gallery, disable Google Photos.
In general, clear out all apps which you already use another app for. If you see an app which you don't understand/recognize, just leave it. Don't start disabling all things that you "think" you don't need. This will result in unwanted battery drain.
32) You can see which apps allow certain permissions, sorted by permissions!
Settings > Apps > (3 dots) > App Permissions. Here, you can see which apps use certain permissions, e.g. Location or Storage. You can then click on the app and take away its permission to do that. To save some battery, see which apps have permission to use Location, and remove any you think you don't need to give location access too.
NOTE: Don't remove any permissions from System/Google apps as this will mess with the phone functionality - e.g. do not touch Google Play Services or Google Play Store or any Samsung system app. Only take away permissions from apps you downloaded from the Play Store..
33) Open into a notification's app straight from the Lock Screen
First, ensure you are on Brief or Detailed view: Settings > Lock Screen > Notifications > View Style = Brief or Detailed. Now when you see a notification on the lock screen, tap it TWICE. This brings up your manual unlock method (PIN or Pattern) but you can still use Face Recognition or Fingerprint to open it.
34) Brightness slider pinned to brief view of quick toggles, only need one swipe down to change brightness
Pull down the quick toggles down to the brightness control. Click the down arrow to the right of the control. Turn ON "show control on top". Now you only have to swipe down once to get brightness, and in combination with (29) this is really helpful.

This is a random list of all the apps that i have found interesting over the period of time in no particular order, Some of the apps helped me solve a very pirticular purpose but i believe others are genuinely interesting and excuse me if any of these apps are not useful to you..
Even i dont use all the apps so pick and choose which you find useful,feel free to add any alternatives you use in comments i would love to check them out.
Blokada - Block ads system wide. (Alternatives: Adgaurd, Adhell3 if you have samsung)
X-plore File browser - Most straight forward , lightweight , non-flashy and functional file browser i have ever seen. (Alternatives : Solid Explorer, Mixplorer)
Files - uses google vision AI to clean out the junk photos from your phone like all those annoying meme and gifs.
Glympse - share your live location for a limited amount of time then it expires, but the best thing about this app is that the receiver need not have any app installed to view your location they can just open the link and start tracking, useful while sharing location with delivery guys.
Alarm Me - you can create location based alarms with this app.
DayWise - don't let your notifications distract you while you are doing something important get them in batches at designated time using this app.
Pros and cons - this app will help you decide between any two things by listing their pros and cons and how important the pros and cons are to you.
Neighbourly - ask local questions and get answers.
Sms Organizer - this app has all the smart features you can imagine and more for a sms app.
CleanFox - unsubscribe to all the junk mails with ease using this app.
Remindee - create reminders from any app using your share option in Android.
Alarm Clock - a very stubborn alarm clock which make sure you wake up on time using riddles maths problems and involving some physical activity etc.
Transferwise - international money transfer has become free and easy with this app.
Macrodroid - this is a device automation app which is like Tasker but very user-friendly than it. (Alternative ; IFTT)
Tempmail - create a temporary email to temporary ly sign up for services and access their content, useful with those pages which annoying you to sign up to view their content. (Suggested Alternative : instaddr)
Pocket sense - use this while travelling through public transports and crowded places so that you will never lose your phone again.
Universal copy - this app is useful to copy all the text which you can't usually copy which is on the screen.
Countdown - helps you to create countdown widget for the important events.
Gratitude journal - simple app to keep you happy new year and keep you going in your life, just note down what are the things you are grateful to have in your life for that particular day or at that particular point of time and reading it back once in a while will make you feel much better.
All in one cart - one app for all your shopping needs you can search for a product in multiple shopping sites at once and compare their prices instantly, Available** only in India**.
Flynx - open all the links together in background as bubbles and read them later (i know many other apps can do this but this app in pirticular looks cool) (Alternatives : Flyperlink, Lynket)
Sectograph - this is a very inntutive day planning widget.
Notin - easiest and laziest way of adding reminders to your phone.
Curiosity - learn something curious everyday.
Budget planner - very easy and straight forward budget planner that I have ever used.
Pegion - an open source and end to end encrypted clipboard syncing app that can sync your clipboard to the desktop.
Purchased apps - view all your play store purchase in one place and view them by categories with ease
Dns speed test - check the best DNS for your network and use it to enhance your browsing experience by setting up that in ur wifi settings.
App checker - check which apps installed on your phone are targeted for latest version of Android.
Join - this apple help to keep all your devices link up together to share files text excetra in between them. (If you use swiftkey there is apparently a clipboard sync in windows)
Firefox Send - now share files on cloud using a link without any tension by placing time and number of download restriction to that link.
Covurse - this app will send your loved ones a text when you reach a a particular location which you have set even if you forget to text them.
Bounce - this is a bike rental app but what makes it unique is that you can pick up the bike from the the nearby location and park it anywhere you want. Available only in India
Porter - this is like Uber but for mini trucks. Available only in India
Eva - this is an app where you can find great telegram channels to follow.
Beebom - great app for tech news and have many videos for android tips and tricks.
Dunzo - great to send any package to any part of the city securely and cheaply with ease.Available only in India
Unapp - Uninstall multiple apps at once.
Flud - Great alternetive to utorrent. (Alternative : Libretorrent,ttorrent )
Bitwarden - Great open source alternetive to lastpass or 1pass.
Tidy Panel - hide persistent notifications imsted of blocking them as some apps need persistent notifications to use them so us like Mi band fitness and Adm. You can also use Auto notifications if you are feeling geeky and want full functionality for free.
Moasure - Measure things with your phone with great accuracy.
LifeRPG - Set and complete goals gamer style.
Jtouch - control system using one hand, ad-free.
Forest - helps you stay away from your phone while performing important tasks. Since there are so many apps I couldn't write descriptions are little short for some so I would recommend you to check those apps out for yourselves .
SDmaid pro - Sensible Android cleaning tool.
Live Transcribe - A app by google to get live transcription (Speech to Text),its very fast and useful.
ADM - Use this for multi threaded downloads faster than stock.
Tiles - create custom tiles like this.
Wifiman - A wifi manager app with lots and lots of useful features.
Telegram X -better telegram client.
Bacon camera - gives more manual control over your stock camera app.(Suggested App)
System ui tuner - allows more customization on stock/close to stock Android OS.

Wow. Just wow. It made an amazing phone even better.
I had been thinking about rooting for quite a long time, but never actually got to doing it. Inspired by this post, I decided to go for it. The process seemed hard at first, but I just followed a tutorial and everything went smoothly, the whole process didn't take longer than 30 minutes. The most painful part was backing up my images and videos.
So, as I was browsing the post I mentioned earlier, many people were wondering why would you actually need to root your phone in 2019. Well, I'm a total newbie when it comes to rooting, but here's some nifty root-only tweaks/apps that I installed today. I'm probably still missing tons of great modules. Feel free to suggest your favorite modules/apps in the comments!

• Google Product Sans (Magisk)

Replaces the default font with Google's Sans, really overhauls the look, even though it's just a font. pic

• iOS12.1 Emoji (Magisk)

Replaces the disgusting Android emojis with iOS emojis. pic

• OnePlus 6 OOS Stereo Speaker Mod (xda)

This one's cool. It turns the earpiece into a secondary speaker, giving you stereo speakers. Obviously it's a lot quieter than the main speaker, but it helps. Install at your own risk, the earpiece probably wasn't designed for this.

• OPFeedLauncher (xda)

My only gripe with the OnePlus Launcher was the fact that it didn't support Google Discover. It does now, and it works flawlessly. pic

• OnePlus6T Mclaren Mod (xda)

Replaces the sounds and the boot animation to the ones found in the Mclaren 6T. I don't even have a 6T, but the boot animation is still nice. Wallpapers also included. pic

• ViPER4Android FX Materialized (Magisk)

A system-wide equalizeaudio enhancement app. This one is a must if you listen to any music at all. Has tons of features, which I'm not gonna list here. Just download it, trust me. It requires a little bit of tweaking, but it makes everything sound a hundred times better. This was one of the main reasons I decided to root, and I'm not disappointed. pic

• YouTube Vanced (Magisk)

An alternate YouTube app with background playback, picture in picture, dark mode and other nice goodies. Most people probably already know about this, since it doesn't require rooting. You can find it on Magisk though, which helps with keeping it up to date.

• AdAway (F-Droid)

Replaces the hosts file to block ads, system-wide.

• Swift Installer (Play Store)

Okay, this is epic. System-wide dark mode with customizable accent colors. I'll just let the pictures speak for themselves. Costs 2 dollars but it's worth every single penny. album

Hello there fellow Android enthusiasts and new Android users (future enthusiasts?) alike. I've been using Android for a very long time and have such used many different devices, ROMs and many apps from all kinds of different sources. Even though I consider myself to have a very broad knowledge of apps that are available - I will always stop and read peoples lists. "Apps I Can't Live Without", "Best Apps for n Activity", "Best Alternatives to n". - these lists usually contain apps I know and have tried at some point but more often than not - there are a few apps in there that I have never seen - and immediately want to try. I've discovered some amazing apps this way and recently I read another list on this very sub in which a user broke down his app recommendations. This inspired me to do a list of my own with my recommendations and currently used apps, for old and new users alike.
I've broke them down into sections and below the apps I recommend I will also add some "honourable mentions", these are alternative apps that I've used and would also recommend. You may have a different preference to me and Android is all about choice so have a looksi at these.
Launcher
The launcher is the most important app on your device. You will us this more than any other app and it will be constantly running. I use different launchers based on my needs so I'll list them with a few alternatives.
Action Launcher is my preferred launcher. It is very close to the pixel aesthetic which I like but has many other premium features that set it aside from other launchers. It can theme all elements of the launcher to match your wallpaper colours, you can open a widget by simply swiping on the app icon, you can hide folders in covers which also open with a swipe on the icon. You can modify the quick bar and add your own shortcuts in there as well as the popup settings menu on the main screen. An all round awesome launcher that I've found to be very reliable. The only nitpick I have with it is it's compatibility with Kustom Live Wallpaper. The developer claims to have added support but I don't think he did it right because it still doesn't quite work correctly. Which leads me on to my next recommendation...
Nova Launcher is probably the most well known custom launcher. It's missing a couple of the features that make Action Launcher unique - but it it is still one of the most robust and feature rich launchers out there. Hugely popular and well maintained for many many years now. It plays very well with KLWP so when I'm using a full Kustom setup - I use Nova as my launcher of choice.

The Basics:
Here I'm just going to list the basic apps everybody uses (Phone, SMS, Browser etc.), but obviously the ones I choose to use and why.
Pulse SMS is my SMS client of choice. Pulse is well designed with the extra functionality that you need nowadays in your SMS clients. It is very up to date with material guidelines and includes custom theming options as well as light, dark and black modes - which can also be toggled automatically at night, scheduled messages, fine-tune notification control and much more. Note: I don't use the web messaging feature.

Kiwi Browser is probably my favourite browser of all. It is a chromium based offering built by a senior XDA member and has some excellent features baked in. It has a dark mode, built in ad blocking/cryptocurrency mining protection, it can bypass AMP pages completely and my favourite feature of all - you can place the address bar along the bottom of the screen. You can swipe between open tabs by swiping left or right on the address bar as well as gestures for moving back and forward between visited pages. Phones are huge these days, we need more bottom navigation. In my opinion and this browser handles it perfectly.

Lynket is my default link handler. It's lightning fast and allows me fine control over my custom tabs. You can also choose your custom tabs provider from whichever browsers you have installed currently, so I use Kiwi Browser as my provider. It inherits the bottom address bar from Kiwi, which is absolutely perfect for me. There's even an option to have the links stack up on the side of your screen in chat-head-like fashion for you to open at your leisure.

Memoria Photo Gallery is a stunning photo gallery app and my favourite by far. It was only recently released so features are still being added but it already has everything I need. Give it a go, it's beautiful.

Gboard is the keyboard I use these days. I used Swype for so many years but once they slowed down on development and Google picked up speed on theirs - I made the switch and I do love it to be honest. The swiping is very accurate for me where as other keyboards have been a bit hit and miss. The swipe across space-bar to move your cursor is just awesome, I dig that. I do still miss Swype though :(

Boost is by far the best Reddit client I have come across. It has a wonderful design, theming and other quality of life improvements such as auto playing GIFs and videos without ever having to leave the app, advanced threading options and bottom navigation options. I also really love inverting the drawer because I'm right handed and having all of my subs there in such ease of access swiping from the right of the screen - is dynamite.

Telegram X is something I use to communicate with a few specific people but I really hated the default Telegram app. This one is fantastic. Just give it a go...
Privacy and Security
Apps that help safe-guard me and my data.
Adaway (ROOT REQUIRED) is an open source ad blocker that will compile an up to date hosts file and apply it to your device. It blocks ads globally in browsers, apps, games etc. I much prefer this method to how most other ad block solutions work. If you would prefer to replace the hosts file yourself though, check out this repository on GitHub - for it is mighty.

App Ops (ROOT REQUIRED) is a great tool for managing system level permissions. You can also set up templates to be applied to any newly installed apps. If you're rooted, you will be able to install and use immediately. If you are not rooted, but you are on Android 6 or above - you can use ADB to allow the required access.
Bouncer a beautifully designed temporary permission manager. It will allow you to grant access to certain permissions upon opening an app and automatically revoke the permissions again after the app is closed. Excellent, still in beta but works pretty well at the moment and the developer is actively adding to it.
Enpass is my go to password manager app. It has everything I need and allows me choose my cloud solution. It also had the option of a lifetime license and I much prefer that to the monthly subscription model that most password manager apps adopt.

ExpressVPN I have on my Android because why not. I use ExpressVPN on my home computer to access Netflix's regional content and they allow me multiple devices so I have it on my phone just in case.

Firefox Focus is a privacy oriented browser that stores no data and erases all history data with one click when you're done. It can remain in the background hidden from recent apps and require authentication to continue any existing session.

Media
The apps I use for all my media needs...
Moon+ Reader Pro is the app I use to read my ebooks. I originally found it because I had an obscure ebook which just couldn't seem to be read on any other ereader apps I tried. It worked in Moon+ and after using it I realised how incredibly feature rich it is. It literally has everything I could think of and I've yet to find an ebook it hasn't been able to read. So I'm really happy with that. They have a free version you can try as well.
Photoshop Express is my image modification tool of choice. I'm a long time desktop Photoshop user so it made sense to use this when I had an image on my phone I quickly needed to modify. It has served my purpose so far and is very feature packed for a free app.
Pocket Casts is my favourite podcast app by far. I used podcast Addict for a long time after being introduced to my first podcast by my wife - she used podcast Addict so I just naturally downloaded that one to listen to podcasts of my own. After encountering a few strange navigation issues I went looking for better option and I absolutely fell in love with Pocket Casts. It's beautifully designed feature packed. My needs are very basic so it far exceeds them and I've never had to look at another podcast app since.
Shazam Lite I rarely need to use but when I do - I need it to be quick. I want to open it and identify a song, then close it. The Shazam app has become so bloated over the years that it's no longer simple or fast. I was excited when they released a "Lite" version because it meant I could use it for what I actually want to use it for. I'm not checking Shazam for the music charts lol. To my dismay - the lite app was locked to specific regions! Bizarre. Fortunately, somebody from XDA had the same gripes as me and decided to create a modded APK which bypasses the region lock. What a legend.
TimberX is a delightfully simple music player that works across all form factors. It's not bloated, has playlist control, embedded lyrics, folder browsing, fetching artist images from LastFM and dark mode. It's a relatively new app but I'm excited to see where it goes. For now, I'm in love. The developer seems very active so I'm hoping for big things from this one.

VLC is my go to video player. VLC has been with me for as long as I can remember across many devices across many years. When it finally came to Android I had found my replacement to the ever reliable MX Player who have been bought by some company that wants to use their software for some kind of streaming platform? I don't know... But I just need a local player for my device, so I steered away from them before any of the changes came and picked up VLC full time.
YouTube Vanced for the background playback and ad blocking. The way YouTube should be.
TV Time is an app I use to track my TV shows. I watch a lot of TV shows and this allows me to keep track of where I'm up to, as well as see when upcoming episodes of my favourite shows are airing. Also has a huge community where people can discuss individual episodes and series as a whole and it's rather satisfying after watching something huge happen and going to share in other peoples reactions to what the hell just happened. Memes galore and lots of laughs. It also doesn't require any payment or monthly fees. Awesome.

Personalisation and Customisation
I'm huge into customising my phone, I love to design and build new layouts or generally make my phone work better for me. Here's a few of my highly recommended customisation apps...
Adapticons is an app I use to create uniform icons on device for the apps that my icon packs don't cover. Excellent tool.
Kustom Widget Creator (KWGT) is an insanely powerful WYSIWYG widget creator. The developer is incredibly talented, very active in the community and always willing to help out. He is also constantly adding new features and responding to bug reports. A truly incredible app.
Kustom Live Wallpaper (KLWP) is another app from the same developer as KWGT - it's essentially the same powerful WYSIWYG layout - except instead of a widget you can create a fully interactive live wallpaper complete with animations, switches and all kinds of other goodies. You would be truly amazed with what people have made using this app and words can't quite describe how in depth it actually it is.
Pixolor is a colour picker tool which layers a live eye dropper like tool on top of your screen - just drag it to the colour you need and it will extract the relevent info for you. The easiest method I've seen by far.
Muzei is another live wallpaper app that will automatically switch your wallpaper to a random piece of art every day. You can change the blur and dim of the picture for both desktop and lock screen and there are numerous plugins available which allow you to pull images in from different sources.
Chrooma Live Wallpaper creates really colorful wallpapers made from shapes in a material like design with paralex animations and auto changing at desired points with new shapes and colour palletes. I used it for a while and really liked it. Sometimes I still go back.
Tapet is an amazing on-device wallpaper generator and switcher. It generates beautiful, random wallpapers that are unique to each creation. Nothing is downloaded and there are so many customisation options - great app.
Custom Quick Settings lets you create your own custom Quick setting tiles. Very handy as it integrates with Tasker which I use religiously and already comes with an array of quick settings ready to use. Root is not required but ADB access will be.

Tools and Essentials
Tools and other apps I consider to be great or generally just useful to me.
Tasker is the grandaddy of all Android apps. I consider this the best money I ever spent on an app followed closely by the Kustom suite. Allows you to automate pretty much anything and has recently been taken over by João of AutoApps fame - who is again, a very talented and active developer. The recent updates have been absolutely fantastic and he's constantly adding improvement after improvement. Absolutely amazing.

Caffeinate is a quick setting tile that will simply toggle the display time out on and off. Sometimes I just need my screen to stay on and it's nice to have a quick tile to achieve this swiftly.

FK Kernel Manager (ROOT REQUIRED) is an app that can be used to tweak kernel settings on a custom kernel. It also has a battery monitor built in which is rather cool and a flashing tool - which will let you flash pretty much anything except entire ROMs without the need for booting into a custom recovery. Excellent at what it does and always uses the very latest material design guidelines. It is developed by Francisco Franco who is another great developer and I assume needs no introduction. He seems to specialise in applications that alter your device on a system level and is creator of one of the most popular custom Android kernels of all time - Franco kernel.

Servicely (ROOT REQUIRED) is another of Franco's apps, this one allows you to kill troublesome services for good (even those pesky ones that restart themselves) and place apps in standby when the screen is off, now I'm still testing this as I've been a Greenify user for a long time. If anybody has any opinions on these two apps please do discuss, I'm interested to know what other people think. I've asked Franco himself but he doesn't know how Greenify hibernates its apps so he can't say whether or not they use the same method or one is more effective than the other - but being able to block services directly and reliably makes this app a keeper anyway.
Naptime (ROOT REQUIRED) is another Franco app that aims to help save you precious battery by utilizing Android's "Doze" power saving features more efficiently. Root is preferred but it can also be used in rootless mode. Rootless mode will require ADB access for initial setup.
Simple Reboot (ROOT REQUIRED) is yet another app by Francisco Franco. It lets you reboot to your desired location (recovery, fastboot etc.) rather than having to open a terminal and use the command line.
Calendar Widget (Home Agenda) may as well go here since we're on a Franco hype. This is just a really nice widget that displays all of your upcoming events. You can customise the hell out of it with a cool layout that shows the changes to the widget as you make them.
Mixplorer is my file manager of choice. I've been using it for a very long time and it is always my first installed app when I migrate to a new ROM. It has all the cloud integration built in so you don't need loads of different apps and it has root add-ons as well. I'm a huge fan of Mixplorer but it doesn't get the attention other file managers seem to get. Note: the developer releases this app for free as well on XDA Developers.

SD Maid is an excellent tool. It will find and clean unused app data, duplicate data, old data that isn't used anymore but is just kinda hanging around, as well as optimizing your database tables. It can run manually or on a schedule, it has app control options as well including freezing and even removing system apps. Root preferred for extra features.
Unit Converter Ultimate is always around on my phone just in case. I rarely have need for unit conversion, but this is a nice open source app that I found suits my needs.

Stocard is a useful app for me. You scan all of your loyalty cards with the camera on your device and it will store them in the app for you. You can just open the app, select your card and the code will popup full brightness ready to be scanned. Saves me wallet space and that is brilliant. Also syncs with my Google account and automatically backs everything up, that's handy.
Stats and System Monitoring
Stuff that helps you keep track of everything that's happening on your device.
Action Dash is a version of Google's Digital Wellbeing app but it has a few more stats recorded and a couple of customisation options such as not showing certain apps, dark mode etc. It basically breaks down the time you spend on your device into lovely little charts. It was created by Chris Lacy, the developer of Action Launcher.
Side Note: It is possible to get Google's Digital Wellbeing app running on most devices running Android Pie. See here.
AccuBattery is an app that can save your batteries health. It records the wear on your battery for each charge cycle and can recommend how long to charge your device with minimum wear to your actual battery. It works on the notion that "Scientific research shows that battery lifespan can be extended up to 200%, when you charge your device to only 80%". It also offers up a different take on the recoreed battery statistics calculating them in a different way to other battery monitors and I would highly recommend giving it a go. It's well designed, very informative (I learned so much about batteries through this app lol) and helps your battery live for much longer. I only wish I had discovered it sooner so please give it a go.

DevCheck is probably my favourite app for checking the statistics on absolutely everything hardware related that resides on my device. It's nicely designed and I've yet to require something that this app couldn't provide me. Plus it's made by flar2 of EX Kernel fame, he does good work.
