Republic of Mauritius is an island nation in Indian Ocean off the south east coast of African continent. It is located at the intersection of African Continent and Asian Continent. Around 975AD, Arab sailors found this uninhabited island and named it as Dina Arobi. Then Portuguese found this still uninhabited in the year 1507 and controlled it for few decades. Then Dutch came on this island. Later the island became a French Colony from the year 1715 to 1810. During Napoleonic wars, the French surrendered this island to the British who further re-named it Mauritius. The British found the land of some area of the country conducive for farming and so agricultural developments got started. They brought labourers from India and some other Asian countries which were under British Empire. They brought skilled and unskilled labourers through ships and got them settled permanently to grow sugarcane, potatoes, rice, fruits and were engaged in sugar producing mills. Ports were developed, the sugar production and exports of sugar, agricultural products and textiles improved nation's economy. Port Louis was established as a naval base and ship building center. Buildings, roads, bridges, hospitals and trade centers were constructed. The Britain granted independence to Mauritius in 1968 and the people of Mauritius formed their own democratic government and gradually became world class tourists' destination because of scenic beauty of landscape, good weather, hotels-resorts-spas network, easy accessibility to business cities and flourishing beaches. Port Louis is the capital and the largest city of Mauritius. The country is multi ethnic, multi linguistic, multi-cultural and of multi religions. The main airport of Mauritius being Sir Ramgoolam Int'l Air Port which is 48 km south west of Port Louis. English is the official language and is widely spoken. French is equally popular language and comes next to English in usage. Creole is another common language in use. The Casela Bird Park is nearby. You can see sugar plantations, marshes, corals and lagoons around the town.
Balaclava: The city of Balaclava is widely considered as the best place to stay in Mauritius. It is located in the north of Island which is definitely the most beautiful part of Mauritius.
