Analysis - Differences between Hugh Cook's online edition and the published version of The Wordsmiths and the Warguild (The Questing Hero, Hero Returns)
While reading the Wordsmiths and the Warguild on Hugh's website I noticed a number of spelling errors. Checking the printed book, they were fixed. Did Hugh upload his first manuscript?! So I decided to do a text analysis to see what other differences there are. Maybe I'd find something interesting? Some funny ones are Website says "Buttons" and the book says "Buttocks", twice. Also I'm sure Togura's lips were warm and yielding but they changed it to Day Suet. Printed book is at Open Library. Online book is available at Hugh's Website. This was unkind to the daughter. While she was no great beauty, she was definitely not a slug. After all, slugs do not have arms and legs - and, besides, slugs do not grow to that size. Nevertheless, most of the laws passed by the king were widely flouted, or obeyed only by accident. He decreed that everyone should wash their clothes and their bodies at least once in every lunar month; scarcely one person in a thousand obeyed. Let it also be known that, contrary to the traveller’s declaration, the amusements of the people were many. The principal pastimes were hunting, feuding, fighting and fornication. Drinking and gambling were also very popular. Certain hobbies, including fishing and rat-fighting, also had large followings, and, on occasion, the people found time for dancing, music and banqueting. The inhabitants of Sung also had their own unique cultural heritage, the intricacies of which were seldom appreciated by outsiders; it included lively games such as “Stone the Leper”, and detailed religious rituals such as those laid down for strangling unwanted children and disposing of aged relatives. The disgruntled travellertourist was none other than the renegade wizard of Drum, who lived on a high and barren island in the dangerous strait separating the continent of Argan from the Ravlish Lands. The wizard of Drum had passed through Sung frequently on his various peregrinations, and, for one reason or another, had never been very pleased with his reception. The Devaluation, which ruined many people, was the direct result of swine fever. While the kingdom of Sung was at best a legal fiction, and the king of Sung little more than a handy butt for the jokes of most of his people, the currency issued by the king had for many years enjoyed great respect and stability. The banquet was in full swing. Buoyant with drink and excitement, Day and Togura danced to the skirl of the skavamareen. In the clinch, he brushed against her soft breasts, which flushed out against her light woollen chemise. Her sly little fingers dared his hard-fleshed buttonsbuttocks, then stopped because: “Your father’s watching us.” “I love you,” said Togura. HisHer mouth was warm and yielding. His embrace savoured the curves of her back and her buttocks. Moths danced around the doorway lanterns. The night was cool but he was hot, his lust shafting hard within his trews. He smelt her hair, her skin, her perfume. He burped. “Not so swell, my hearty,” said Cromarty, unshipping a knife.“Not so swell.” Togura was unarmed. He grabbed for a stick, but one of Cromarty’s scungers stepped on it. “Cut him good, Crom!” said one. Suddenly the old man swung his shepherd’s crook. The stout wooden staffshaft smashed Cromarty’s wrist. Quick as a flash, the old man demolished the surviving lantern. There were shouts, roars and cries of pain in the darkness. Togura hit the dirt “Tog,” said Day uncertainly. “Was that you?” “Me,” admitted Togura, blushing in the darkness. “What the feck and fuckle did you think it was, girl?” said the ancient mariner. The ilps was very large. It had seventy-nine teeth, shared between two mouths of generous dimensions. Five of the teeth were poisoned. It stank of rotten oranges. Its fingertips smoked with blue light. A creaking bucket lift was bringing up gemstock ore from one of the veins which ran far underground. After all, Slerma was only sixteen years old; there was scarcely time for her to have grown to the enormousmonstrous size which she was alleged to have attained. She was probably just a little fat and sludgy. He clapped his hands, and their meal was brought in. There were two or three plates apiece for Togura, the baron and Prick, a number of heavily laden platters for the king and his wife, and a large trough for Slerma. It was impossible even to tell whether her vast, wallowing face had a jawbone. Seasick folds of flesh swayed, buckled and lurched as she ate. Technically, some of that flesh must have belonged to her facecheeks and some to her chin, but such distinctions vanished in the awesome slurry of fat which constituted her face. Two streets from Dead Man’s Drop, Togura bought some roasted chestnuts from a street vendor, a crippled hag with a festering rupia despoiling the skin beneath her left eye. She tried to cheat him. They argued. He swore. She cursed him. They parted on bad terms, he with her chestnuts and she with his money, both convinced that they had got the worst of the bargain; rounding a corner, he kicked at a cat with ringworm, swore again, then stopped to eat. And, at his command, Togura drifted off into silk-blosomedbosomed drug dreams which suckled him with nectar and fed him on honey-basted melody cats. While Togura ate and slept, while the days shortened and the rains pounded down, the townspeople counted the cost of their orgiastic disastersession with the odex, and argued as to whether it was a blessing or a disaster. “You may be right my son, you may be right,” said Brother Troop, and let him go dressed as he pleased. Slerma was as huge as he had remembered - if anything, worse. A buxom girl could have been made from the flesh of each of her forearms, and a respectable whore from each of her thighs; her belly could have given birth to a regular conclave of washerwomen. Her fingers, as fat as sausages, looked deceptively soft and helpless; remembering the true strength of thoseher bone-crushing hands, Togura shuddered. To think that he had almost been married to this! Togura looked up - and up - and up - and saw above him an octagon of day. This building had no roof. He was reminded of another place which had had no roof. Remembering the torture pit inside the stone beehive, he imagined that he smelt an intolerable stench of decay. Half-singing voices yakkered and laughed. A tentacle clutched for him. Jon Arabin gave another order. And the weapons muqaddam grabbed Togura and started to drag him to the edge of the deck. “This is a joke, yes?” said Togura. The weapons muqaddam made no answer. “A joke? Understand?” said Togura desperately. “A joke?” They were now very close to the edge. “Draven!” screamed Togura. And started to kick, scratch, struggle and bite. It did him no good. He was hauled to the very edge. “Draven!” shouted Togura, sighting his friend at last. “Stop him!” “Sorry, boy,” said Draven, advancing at a casual saunter. “This isn’t my ship. It waddled down the beach, its tail dragging across the shingle, then spread its wings – which , as it was a sea dragon, were water wings, not capable of flight - and plunged into the water. Swimming swiftly and gracefully through the lumbering seas, it rounded a headland and was lost from sight. Then a voice roared: “Begenoth!” The quarrelling dragons instantly quailed down to silence. “Shavaunt!” shouted the voice. And the dragons turned and fled. Togura was alone. “Now then,” said the dragon commander, entering the courtyard. “What started all that off?” “I still don’t see what’s funny,” said Togura. “I can’t be that bad.” The language barrier prevented anyone from enlightening him. Before he had left Sung, he had known, forFor as long as he could remember, he had known that Galish was spoken everywhere, by everyone; it was the universal trading language, the lingua franca of all the world. He had done a lot of unlearning since then. They practised warfare, of course, but mostly by way of sport and ritual. War helped release unhealthy aggressions, and helped bind the community together, particularly on those festive occasions when they had prisoners they could torture to death. “If I had half a chance of getting anywhere,” said Togura, “then I’d go. As it is, I’m staying.” “Dosh,” said the headman, thrusting one of his broken wrists in the direction of the south. “What do you mean, dosh?” yelled Togura, angry now. “You”re crazy.” The answer was the same. “Dosh yourself!” said Togura. “Togura,” said the headman, his voice intimate, urgingurgent, commanding. “Togura, dosh.” They could go on like this all day. It was very frustrating arguing with someone who didn’t speak your language. Togura provided. He ate some more, feeding methodically. When he could eat no more, he decided it was time to go. To give his broken shinbone the smoothest possible ride, he was constrained to travel on his back. He started off, using his hands and his good leg. Raising his buttocks from the ground sent pains shooting along his right leg; his saddle-sick buttonsbuttocks would have to drag along in the dust. “A woman of evil,” said Draven, with a shudder. “Her name was Ampadara. Yes, that was the name. She was theYen Glass Ampadara. She was chief torturer for the Lord Emperor of Tameran, the man they call Khmar. She had me cut to pieces, starting with my testicles.” Togura at first had his doubts, but Draven backed up his tale with so much detail that it surely had to be true. Draven was eloquent about the terrors of the Collosnon Empire which dominated the continent of Tameran. Draven, having gathered up half a dozen big, husky, capable-looking men, spoke to them swiftly, giving his orders. Then they dispersed, shouting their orders, press-ganging men as they went. Togura, Jakes and Draven, a three-man hunting pack, began to recruit a second echelon of group-leaders. Soon, ToguraDraven was getting control. At this point, Drake’s story - which was, incidentally, pure invention - was interrupted as Draven came strolling along. He was rattling some dice in his fist. “Hello there,” said Draven. “Care to roll for this evening’s rations?” “I hear your dice talking,” said Drake. “And I can already hear them telling lies. Don’t roll with him, friend Forester, for he’ll have you rolling for your spleen unless you’re careful.” However, as only three people had caught fish, fourth prize was not awarded. DrakeDraven also organised a tug-of-war, a rat-fighting competition and a knuckleskull league, knuckleskull being a pirate game which is played with cudgels, and tends to lead to bad headaches or worse.

New Zealand locations shine in Disney's new Mulan trailer Shame on one of our own, the Kiwi director of Whale Rider, for helming this movie. How could the director go full corporate: from making Whale Rider, a ground-breaking film about Maori spirituality and indigenous culture, to slavishly making Mulan for a regime that is brutally stomping out indigenous rights and democracy in Xinjiang, Hong Kong and Mongolia? I am definitely boycotting the director Niki Caro from now, or should I call her the new Leni Riefenstehl.
It’s an understatement to say that a lot has happened since the trailer for Disney’s live-action Mulan was released last year, shortly after Hong Kong’s draconian national security law was passed without consultation or vote in June. The ongoing assault on democracy in Hong Kong has dominated international headlines, with the arrests of pro-democracy activists, newspaper editors and government legislators. On the face of it, the new Mulan is a missed opportunity for Hollywood to explore Chinese history and identity, a confused and superficial statement about Chinese nationalism. A hodgepodge of Chinese historical mise-en-scène, wuxia-style choreography, cheap orientalism and stilted dialogue, it’s also become a lightning rod for pro-democracy and human rights protests around the world. The film-makers made no secret that they were appeasing Chinese censors. In the Hollywood Reporter, it was made known that they went so far as to edit out a love scene. Other changes are more sinister. China has a tradition of “gǔ wéi jīn yòng” (“Use the past to serve the present”). The Mulan legend has been adapted many times, and the character’s origins have changed to suit. Historians largely agree that Mulan was a member of the proto-Mongolic Xianbei people, who lived in northern China in the 5th century. Over time her nomadic identity has been removed, and replaced with that of the dominant Han ethnicity. So claiming this new Mulan is an “authentic” version of the legend is especially ironic at a time when China is cracking down on Mongolian cultural identity alongside the imprisonment and “re-education” of Xinjiang Uighurs. However, controversy over this live-action Mulan really kicked off after the lead actor, Chinese-born naturalised-American “Crystal” Liu Yifei, declared her support for the Hong Kong police after they committed acts of brutality against Hong Kong protesters last year. This sparked the #BoycottMulan movement, which, on the film’s release last week, re-emerged in Taiwan, Thailand and Hong Kong, with ongoing protests in other countries. It has also emerged that the film was partly shot in Xinjiang. In a recent roundtable discussion, Disney’s chief creative officer Alan Horn evaded a question over the political implications of Liu’s comments, saying: “It’s not hard to offend somebody somewhere … we’re not political.” But whether Horn or Disney like it or not, the film has become political, and a symbol of Hollywood’s ongoing pandering to the CCP for funding and box office revenue despite the government’s human rights abuses. What made the original so great was the successful amalgamation of the commercial with the artistic. It did not attempt to be anything but a children’s film, a heart-warming tale of bravery and identity with universal appeal and a strong feminist message. This new adaptation was clearly produced to reap rewards at the Chinese box office and has ended up supporting the Chinese government’s aims. However, it is bogged down with its own glossy, pastiche depictions of ancient Chinese culture – in short, a bewildering piece of cinema, “as mysterious as the dark side of the moon”.
Worked at SPER for 12 months answering the phone. Here's what it's like.
Working at SPER on the phone as a frontline point of contact is all about identifying who the person on the end of the phone is, ensuring their details are current and up to date, identifying and triaging their debt position and trying to extract from them a promise to pay their amount owed as quickly as they can afford, while adhering to preset guidelines. Every conversation at SPER is scripted. You have a script on one screen that outlines the flow of the conversation, page by page – sort of like a choose your own adventure novel, depending on what the person replies with to each question. Some of the pages have mandatory statements or information. Standard flow of a SPER conversation is welcome, complete evidence of identity – name, dob, address – confirm phone numbers, email. Then, ask if the person can make a payment today in full. If not, ask if they can pay something. If not, move to setting up instalment plan, work out amount, frequency, obtain direct debit details or centrepay info, read disclaimers and consequences if agreement isn’t adhered to, end call. Simple right. Where it gets complicated is when people have either broken a bunch of agreements, or have a large debt amount. Let’s look at the latter first. Contrary to some people’s views, the state government is under no obligation to accept whatever amount you can afford – an offer of $20/fortnight to pay off 6 grand of debt over 12 years isn’t going to cut it. Most agreements are based on a maximum time to pay of no more than 3 years, regardless of amount. So you owe up to $2000 – well, they want $30/fortnight minimum. You owe $8000 – now they want $110/fortnight minimum. If you can’t pay, your options depend on your situation. If you’re on Centrelink and you don’t have any other income, you get some leeway if you agree to Centrepay your debt – provided it’s not too high. Because it’s a guaranteed income, in that Centrepay deductions happen before you see the money, SPER will accept a lower figure because they know there’s no risk of it dishonouring, unlike direct debits, which for lots of people, have a habit of dishonouring for a wide variety of reasons. If you don’t earn enough to pay the required amount, you can opt for a Work Development Order (community service) – 33 hours a month max, which pays $1000/mth off your SPER debt. This depends largely on the individual – some people are all for it, and others would rather moan about having to give up $60 from their newstart each fortnight for 4 years than punch out a day of working at vinnies a week for 6 months and get rid of it quickly. (I’m a little biased on this point). If you’re not receiving centrelink and earn over the threshold of what is deemed acceptable income, you have to pay up. Sucks for people who are working part-time, or who are NZ citizens and not eligible for Clink, but then again, if you’re not incurring fines you’re not in this situation in the first place, right? A lot of conversations at SPER are based around what is called default levels – this is how many times you’ve agreed to make payments and haven’t followed through. Any arrangement with SPER will default, or cancel, if it falls more than 2 months behind in the payments. Any payments that dishonour and aren’t paid manually get remembered, and gradually accumulate what’s called arrears, even if you’re making subsequent payments. Each time you default, this gets remembered. If you have a number of defaulted arrangements (essentially proving you can’t be trusted to follow through on the agreements) this can result in what is called mandatory upfront payments, before any potential enforcement action (read: suspension of drivers licence) will be lifted. There’s a difference too depending on the timing. If you call up before a drivers licence suspension takes effect, at most you might have to pay $500, depending on the size of the debt, before you’re put back into an arrangement. But if you leave it until after SPER suspends your licence, you’re often up for either 50% or Payment in FULL of the TOTAL BALANCE THAT YOU OWE. For someone who owes several thousand dollars, this is not going to be an option. There’s always a way around it – but it involves either completing a full financial disclosure agreement and letting SPER pick through the bones of your bank statement and working out an amount they think you can afford, or registering for a work development order if eligible for it. Both take a few weeks to organise, during which time your licence remains suspended. Incidentally, it’s hilarious the amount of people who submit a bank statement claiming financial hardship and have line items relating to cigarette purchases, online gambling deposits or online streaming services. None of these will be deemed essential items. In a nutshell, the government will give you a few chances to resolve your debt relatively painlessly, but if you keep breaking the arrangements, eventually they will get you over a barrel and they will mess with your life and lifestyle and punish you for not doing the right thing earlier. Let’s look at some fines you get a lot of at SPER. Failure to Pay a Toll Demand Notice. This is a fine that TMR issues people who receive a final demand notice from Linkt/GoVia and who don’t pay it. Currently the fine starts at $182.00, and if referred to SPER will become $251.80. A lot of people don’t even realise that these fines exist until they receive them. And people can receive a lot of them. I personally saw people who had 100+ of these – one lady had 200+, with a total debt level of over $60,000. These are a bit of travesty really, because GoVia used to issue a toll demand notice for each individual toll infringement that wasn’t paid (basically one notice per trip), between 2012-2016 or so. If you made 10 trips during a month and didn’t pay any of them, you got 10 notices, and if you didn’t pay those 10 notices – 10 fines. Being fined $2500 all up for 10 toll debts totalling around $50 originally seems a pretty steep markup, the sort of thing if banks were doing there’d be a royal commission into it. Since those days the toll company has changed it now so that they combine the infringements and issue one notice a month, meaning at most your fine is $250/month, rather than immediately going from zero to thousands, but it’s still a very hefty stick to whack people with. Additionally, they haven’t retrospectively changed the rules for the poor fucks who got slammed under the old rules, so all of their debts still remain valid. For a lot of these people they’re on long-term arrangements to repay over 6-8 years that have been agreed to based on financial disclaimers completed, under threat of not being offered again if they break it. But because it’s the government, and because the majority of people pay their tolls, no-one really gives a stuff about these poor schleps stuck with debts of tens of thousands of dollars that started from a couple hundred bucks of unpaid toll trips. It’s a bit like raising taxes on smokes – majority aren’t impacted so don’t care. Whenever the government or the media complained about SPER debt snowballing I used to laugh because a huge chunk of that debt is just the government creating its own problems with these enormous toll fines that they’re piling on people. Failure to Pay Vehicle Registration fines. These are a fairly recent development, in large part brought about because the government got rid of registration stickers, and also because of the advent of online registration renewals. Without that little reminder stuck to the window, a lot of people forget their vehicle registration is due. Some of you might have seen Vehicle Monitoring cameras located on the freeway and highway network in SEQLD. One of the tasks of these cameras is to scan number plates and identify people who have unregistered vehicles. If your plate gets picked up, you get a warning notice sent to you. If you’ve moved house, or aren’t checking that email anymore – and get caught on that camera again, it’s a fine of $522 for being uninsured, and $313 for unregistered. These can be reissued every 2 months. Throw in the SPER fees if you don’t receive the original fine and it works out to be about $975. Some people get 2 or 3 of these before the penny drops or before they get pulled over and told they’re unregistered. Frequently the people who get these fines are the elderly, or people not familiar with the registration system in QLD. Explaining these fines can be difficult. The majority of other fines tend to be parking tickets, and obviously you get tons and tons of speeding fines/red light camera fines, which are fairly self-explanatory, although people love to whinge about how unfair they are. Court ordered fines for misdemeanours and whatnot. Occasionally you get someone with one massive fine – usually a court hearing where the ATO has smashed them for lying on their tax return. If you get people who owe restitution or compensation to an individual for assaulting them or stealing from them (usually) and it’s over $500 they get put straight through to the specialist team to get shaken down (and rightly so – the government can wait for its money, but the person who was bashed or robbed needs it pronto) – occasionally you get the Victim of Crime themselves ringing up to wonder where their money is, or to bitch and moan about the process and how unfair it is that we can’t turn the person out of their home or take their entire centrelink benefit for 2 months – it is a balancing act with those, even criminals have rights and we have to work within the laws for both sides of the equation. It's basically a job where for 7.5 hours a day you’re on the phone dealing with mainly routine stuff, following scripts and steering people through a well trodden path towards repayments, interspersed with the occasional HOLY JEEBUS type call when you’re dealing with someone who is really in deep shtuck and is staring down the barrel of licence suspension and life ruination if they don’t pull their finger out and take steps to sort their debt out. The standard person who finds themselves in this situation got fines, didn’t pay them, kept getting more fines, kept defaulting on arrangements, and eventually runs out of chances after they are several thousand dollars in the hole and now has to pay it all at once or jump through the disclosure or community service hoops outlined above. On the whole it’s a fairly tricky job but it’s easier than working private debt collection – at the end of the day you can always suspend licences if they don’t pay, and you actually have leverage if someone is giving you the verbal finger and not paying. Anyways, this is mainly catharsis for me so hope you enjoyed it, if anyone has a question let me know and I’ll try and answer it.
