Getting Started

Assuming you're reading this because you would like to wear rings and currently don't, here's a quick FAQ.

Materials?

Most common precious metals used in jewelry are silver, gold, platium and variations thereof. You will rarely find pure metal jewelry, reason being that 100% silvegold is actually soft and will warp and become damaged with little effort. The most common alloys for jewelry are:

• Stainless Steel: what your kitchen cutlery is made of. Marketed as a cheap alternative to silver.
• Sterling Silver / .925 silver: 92.5% pure silver mixed with another metal, commonly copper.
• Yellow Gold: (usually) an alloy of gold and some other material, preserving the yellow colour of the gold.
• Rose Gold: An alloy of gold, copper and some white metal e.g. silver. The copper gives the metal a rosy tint.
• White Gold: An alloy of gold and a white metal e.g. silver. Personally I don't see the appeal when silver is 1/10^th the price.

Karats?

When buying jewelry it's important to know what the precious metal content is (or whether it's made of precious metal at all) as this plays a huge part in the quality of the jewelry and how much you should expect to pay.
Sterling silver is the benchmark for quality silver. Sometimes referred to as .925 silver, sterling silver is 92.5% silver by weight. The vast majority of silver jewelry is made of sterling silver - anything new that doesn't specify the quality (.925 / sterling, .999 / fine / pure) is of dubious quality and should be avoided.
Gold content is measured in karats. The scale goes from 0 to 24, with 1 karat being 1 part gold to 23 parts other material. Therefore, 16K gold is 50% pure gold and 24K gold is pure gold. The karat rating for white gold or rose gold is the same - 18K gold and 18K white gold contain the same amount of gold but the gold is alloyed with different materials to change the colour of the resulting alloy.
Metal alloys are generally much harder and resistant to wear. A higher percentage of pure precious metal is not necessarily better or more desirable.

Plating?

Plated jewelry is made from a material coated with a very thin layer of the specified metal. Plated metal is much cheaper than pure metal or an alloy. The material beneath the plating is usually copper, nickel, brass or silver. Jewelry from fast-fashion stores like H&M are generally made of copper or nickel plated with silver or gold.
Vermeil is a restricted term for a specific kind of plating. Whilst plating can be done to any metal with any plate thickness, vermeil is always silver plated with a layer of gold at least 2.5 microns thick.
Be cautious with plated jewelry. The price makes it very attractive but there are down-sides:

• The plating has a tendency to rub off over time, ruining the appearance of your formerly-gold/silver jewelry.
• The exposed metal may cause side effects:
  • Some people are allergic to nickel and will develop a rash.
  • Copper has a tendency to turn your skin green for a few days.

What should I buy?

• Only buy pieces that speak to you. Think of jewelry like a tattoo. It's expensive, you're likely to keep it for a long time and wear it regardless of the rest of your outfit. If you're not sure whether you like a given piece your money would be better spent on something else. If you're not comfortable wearing it that's a lot of money left sat on your dresser.
• Start simple. When making a big change in your wardrobe it's good to take it easy. Try a few small, simple pieces first e.g. a couple of stacking bands or a plain signet ring.
• More is more. A single piece of jewelry will stand out in a bad way. The consenus from the jewelry thread was that it takes a few pieces to appear intentional and blend into an outfit. The sweet spot is 3-5 pieces total - less if you're wearing only one type, e.g. max. 3 rings, more if you're mixing it up e.g. 2 rings, a bracelet and a chain.
• Sterling silver is king. IMO stainless steel does not look good in real life. It may look exactly like silver in the photos but trust me, when you place it side-by-side with silver it looks cheap. Stainless steel is duller, has a gray-tone and brushed-metal surface. It's a hardy material that's very resistant to scratches and wear. Sterling silver on the other hand is much brighter, can be polished smooth or oxidized to add detail and develops a patina over time. Gold is nice but it's very expensive. Mixing metals is hard to pull off so if you buy gold you may feel limited in terms of choice and price when buying future pieces.
• Feel free to ignore this advice. If you want gold jewelry, go for it. If you want to wear more rings than you have fingers don't let me stop you. There are no rules - this is just advice for those who are dipping their toes into jewelry for the first time.

Sizing?

It can be difficult to size jewelry, particulary if you're doing it yourself. Here's some methods you can use ordered by ease/accuracy:

• Use a ring sizer at home. Nowadays they make plastic ring sizers and many online brands will ship you one for free or low-cost. IMO this is the best way to take your ring size but watch a guide or two on YouTube to make sure you get it right.
• Use a cloth tape measure. Take a measurement of your finger in mm using a flexible tape measure and use a size chart to convert to your desired scale.
• Use your existing rings as a guide. If you know the size of your current rings (or you're sizing for a friend or partner who knows theirs) you're pretty set. I bought a thumb ring for my girlfriend for Christmas and compared her current thumb ring to one of mine to get an idea of size. When it turned up it was slightly smaller than expected but still fit.
• Have a professional jeweler size you. You can ask a jeweler to measure your fingers in-store though you may be uncomfortable doing this if you don't intend to purchase anything. Alternatively, try some pieces on and note what size they are if they're a good fit.
• Go to the showroom and let them measure you or try the pieces in-store. The most accurate if you're buying a specific brand. Obviously only an option if you live or travel nearby.
• Pay to have the ring resized. If the ring is too large any jeweler will be able to resize it for you. It's more difficult/expensive to size a ring up, especially if it has details the whole way round. If in either doubt size up, make sure they have a good returns policy or don't buy.

Sizing Tips

Remember that each of your fingers is a different ring size. The fingers on your dominant hand will be thicker than the fingers on your non-dominant hand. The size of your fingers changes depending on the temperature so rings that are loose when it's warm may fall off when it's cold or vice-versa. When measuring at home take a few measurements in different rooms, inside / outside or at different times of day to get an accurate measurement.
If you're not fussed about which finger the ring will sit on, measure a few candidate fingers of similar size (±1) and order a ring in the size between. If the ring arrives and it's too large / small then wear it on the larger / smaller finger.

Where to buy?

• Online: I buy most of my jewelry online. Most designers have an instagram presence and online store. Check the tagged photos on their instagram accounts for inspiration. The more mass-produced brands will have sales on holidays e.g. Christmas or Black Friday.
  
• Independent retailers: Your city may have an area with lots of independent designers / craftspeople / markets - you're likely to find a lot of unique pieces here and physical locations for the designers listed below.
  
• Thrift: You may have some luck at thrift stores or second-hand / charity / pawn shops. In some cities there are second-hand stores that only sell jewelry.
  
• Grailed et al.: The more popular brands (e.g. The Great Frog) will appear on places like grailed or eBay.
  
• On the high street: You're unlikely to find men's jewelry in high street retail / department stores. Most of the jewelry is very delicate and targeted toward women or married couples (wedding bands). The stuff you do find will be relatively inoffensive bands and signet rings.

Simple Rings

Small-to-medium size rings with plain or very simple designs. Stacking bands, signet rings, rings with a single motif like a chain, feather, nail etc.

For context, here is the Aztec Culture Card art, and the art for the Jaguar Warrior.
It's been bugging me pretty much since it was shown off, and here and there on this subreddit I've noted it's got issues, but since I now know that some of the art is being revised, I figured i should do a detailed explanation.
Before I begin, I wanna go ahead and note that the devs actually DID do a much better job depicting Aztec archtecture and clothing in the Food Market art (the weird basket-hat and lack of painted accents on buildings aside). I'm not sure why there's such a discrepancy, but I think that the Culture Card Art might be a tweaked version of alternate/unused Maya art, as the motifs and archtectural style and color scheme is almost identical to on their Culture Card Art and the clothing and body paint shown in current Aztec Culture Card Art is drawing a lot of Maya (or rather, sterotypes of Maya) influences. The only distinctively "Aztec" thing in the main Culture Card art now is the Great Temple with it's twin shrines to Huitzlipotchli and Tlaloc visible in the background, and the roof comb on the other shrine likewise being in a style associated with Aztec architecture (taken from the Santa Cecilia Acatitlan pyramid, though apparently the roof comb reconstruction on the pyramid isn't accurate to what that pyramid in particular originally had!)
I'll do a deeper explanation of what's wrong with the current Aztec culture card art further down, but since that ended up being like multiple paragraphs/pages (And even then, i'm only reviewing stuff that would be relevant to the existing art and i'm not covering absolutely everything, so I link suggestions on further references on Aztec art/architectural/clothing motifs at the bottom), I'll sum it all up in short bullet point format, and people interested in the full breakdown. For the linked visual references in both the bullet points and full post, I'll primarily be using images from existing artistic recreations for the sake of making adapting stuff to the Culture Card art easier, rather then using images of actual surviving ruins, art, or images from manuscripts, but I can provide those upon request as well.
So, here's the tl;dr, bullet point feedback:

• The Culture Card art shows buildings with bare masonry/brick visible. Actual monumental Aztec architecture had smooth stucco over the brickwork, and then painted frescos and accents over that. (This is a problem with the Maya culture card art to an extent, but their clothing and archtecture is closer otherwise and it's not as visible so it's less an issue there)
  
• The colors of paint and accents seen in the culture card doesn't match the colors used in Aztec archtecture in Tenochtitlan as it's supposed to be depicting. It's using White, Red, and Teal/Green (same as the Maya art, in which that's fine), it should be White, Scarlet, Azure, Yellow, and Black.
  
• This is less an accuracy and more a thematic issue, but I don't think the Ball-Court is a good thematic representation of what makes the Aztec unique, other Mesoamerican cultures had the ball game (same for sacrifices re: the Sacrificial Temple being their unique quarter, though that's DEFINITELY not changing even if the art can). A garden in a palace courtyard or chinampas and their canals would represent the Aztec's unique elements for their Culture Card Art more.
  
• The clothing worn by the people is very inaccurate, with open-topped blouses for women and just collar garments for men, and they have wierd, Apocalypo-esque tatoos or body/face paint, and hairstyles seem all over the place aside from a few men who have the right style, but also wierd headbands and bone ear piercings They look "tribal". Women should wear Huipils, and men should have Tilma's. Neither should really have tattoos or paint on them in typical secular contexts, aside from women occasionally using yellow face/body paint. Men should have a distinctive bowl-cut hairstyle with a top knot/tuft (not shown in this image, but most would have one based on social/military rank), while women had hairstyles often including various bulbous side braids and knots.. Jewellery should gold and turquoise/jade primarily, the only common sort of feather based headgear worn in a typical secular context would be Quetzallalpiloni feather tassels tied to the knot of male nobles who had sufficient status for one. Priests (and royalty, indivuals in ceremonial contexts, etc) have exceptions to these, such as priests often using black face/body paint, but see the detailed section for that.
  
• The Ball players are shown wearing basically the same clothing as everybody else in the scene, when that wouldn't be the case. There's actually not a ton of depictions of Aztec ballplayers (even if you define "Aztec" loosely; compare that to the Maya which have tons; part of why I think it's not the best scene choice for the Aztec to begin with!), but what exists suggests they would just be wearing a breechcloth, an additional sort of skirt or protective garment around the thighs/waist (though this is hard to see, see detailed section for clarification) and handguards that covered the top of the hand.
  
• The Jaguar Soldier is likewise entirely inaccurate, with no armor aside from his helmet and both that, his weird collar garment that everybody gives to the Aztec despite it not being a thing, and his shield having a mess of colors and made up patterns. The Jaguar soldier should be wearing a Tlahuiztli warsuit made of thick cloth and feather mosiac, with the feathers arranged to make a jaguar spot pattern. This should be relatively uniform in color (though that color can vary from the expected yellow to red, blue, and white, and probably other colors) and we have a variety of known shield patterns that could be used in place of the entirely fantastical one currently in the art.
  

And that's the summary.... again, if you read these and look at these images, the Food Market art is MUCH closer to what I describe then the Culture Card art. I really think the Culture Card art was modified from one intended for the Maya or something.

Contextual Preamble
For starters, I need to give a short preamble about what "Aztec" even is, as people use the term differently.
Humankind almost certainly means it to primarily mean "Mexica", the denizens of Tenochtitlan (and Tlatelolco, which split off from and was eventually reabsorbed by Tenochtitlan). They are whom the term is most associated with, and we see Tenochtitlan's great temple in the existing Culture Card art, and the Jaguar knightly order was an element of their military.
The Mexica were one subgroup of a broader culture/civilization in Mesoamerica known as the Nahua (which "Aztec" is also sometimes defined as) Other Nahua subgroups beyond the Mexica include the Acolhua, Tepaneca, Xochimilca, Tlaxcalteca, etc. The "Aztec Empire" as a political unit was an alliance between Tenochtitlan and two other Nahua city-states, Texcoco (of the Acolhua subgroup) and Tlacopan (of the Tepaneca subgroup) and the their various subject vassal and tributary states. Not all of these subjects were Nahuan (some were Maya, Zapotec, Mixtec, Otomi, Huastec, Totonac, etc), and not all Nahuan states in Mesoamerica were a part of that "Empire". (notably the Kingdom of Tlaxcala wasn't)... as you can see, depending on how you define the term, a LOT of things could or couldn't be considered "Aztec"!
I'm going to be primarily focusing on Mexica stuff when possible (and as such what I mention here may not be applicable to other Nahua groups), though at times I'll be pulling from broader Nahua sources when it's reasonable to do so, as there is very little surviving architecture and manuscripts from solely Mexica sources.
For simplicities sake i'm going to continue to use the term "Aztec" unless the distinction becomes important, in which case I'll say Mexica or Nahua, etc.
Architectural Accuracy
For architecture, there shouldn't be much if any masonry and brickwork visible on the ballcourt, temples, and other fancy, ceremonial or administrative structures. Monumental architecture for virtually all Mesoamerican civiilzations, including the Aztec was covered in stucco and then painted accents and frescos, over the internal stone and mortar and outer brickwork. The only likely place you'd likey see bare masonry in Tenochtitlan would be commoner residences (which would be daub/straw or adobe brick) or less fancy noble homes, but even then some accounts assert even these would be covered in clean stucco even if some pictorial depictions show otherwise.... but for the Culture Card art that shouldn't be a problem, since that'd be showing large structures in the ceremonial precinct or even if the view is changed, probably fancier palaces.
As far as the painted accents, frescos, and murals on top of that white/biege stucco, the most common colors should be scarlet, azure, yellow/mustard, white and black, not the red and teal/green seen in the image, as those 4 colors (plus a base off white stucco) is what's seen in surviving structures and objects found in Tenochtitlan's central ceremonial precinct. To simplify it down further,the base white stucco, scarlet, azure, and yellow (like what the Scott & Stuart Gentling painting I linked above uses, though note that apparently more recent research has gleaned that the Great Temple had more paint on it then that, and that the layout they used for the precinct's structures is slightly out of date... though I don't think the devs need to go THAT far with accuracy). The white/red/green used in the Aztec Culture Card art currently is less "Aztec" and is more typical of some Maya cities like some structures at Copan, or in Central Mexico, Teotihuacan, as seen in a 3d reconstruction of the Cidudela complex and it's temples . If i'm going to nitpick, I'd also note that the square geometric pattern visible on the building on the far end of the court isn't something that i've seen in Aztec art, or even really Mesoamerican art in general (though if I had to place it i'd say it looks Zapotec). A safe bet would be a Xicalcoliuhqui step fret based pattern, which is very common in the art of virtually every Mesoamerican civilization; if the developers aren't interested in painstakingly making a custom mural based on actual manuscripts and iconography.
I'd also note that while a view of a ball court works, I don't think it really highlights the unique elements of Aztec society or urbanism when all Mesoamerican societies had ballcourts. In fact, (and I note this again further down when disscusing the attire of Ball-players) there's VERY little depictions of the ball game or players among Aztec art (even Nahuan art as a whole, not just Mexica) relative to, say, Maya art. A view of a palace courtyard with a garden (I'm not sure the "asian" style of garden here is accurate, though, but I don't think that sort of hyper accuracy is needed here), or of canals and chinampas, would be better (likewise I think these would make a better emblematic quarter then a sacrificial altar, but I realize that's not changing): The Aztec placed a huge emphasis importance on botany, herbal, medicine, using them to ward off misasma and the like, to the point where they had formal taxonomic systems for categorizing plant life and Tenochtitlan was largery built out of artificial islands used for aquaculture with canal,s between them, with many impressive aquaduct and dike systems; etc. This, especially the botany stuff, is what makes them unique; though keep in mind for the latter option that not many canals reached very deep into the city center, as the center of Tenochtitlan was natural ground, not chinampas, though according to various maps there was a canal close to the ceremonial precinct behind Moctezuma II's palace in front of his zoo/garden.
Clothing & Fashion Accuracy
For clothing of the spectators, things are entirely off. Both the men and women here are shown with random geometric tatoos, the women are wearing blouses which leave the shoulders and upper chest exposed; and the men just have loincloths and random collars on, piercings made out of bone, wierd headbands, etc. The hairstyles are off too generally (though I do see some signature hair-knots on some men). I noted before how the clothing and fashion here seems to have some Maya influences, but even for the Maya things are pretty off, and I'm sensing a lot of influence from Mel Gibson's Apocalypo, which... is not a good idea. The Women should primarily be wearing a garment as huipilli: these are blouses, but they cover the upper chest, shoulders, and sometimes the arms as well (note here the woman in the red dress is Maya, not Nahua/Aztec). The men, in addition to loincloths (sometimes a cloth tied to the hip was also worn over the breechcloth, but more on that in the ball player section), should generally have a mantle/cloak known as tilmatl, worn in different styles depending on social class. A basic huipilli and tilmatl should be white or biege with perhaps small color accents, but those worn by nobles had rich patterns: often with floral or avian motifs (especially for huipilli), geometric designs, marine or animal motifs, etc.
Nobles would also have a variety of jewelry: earrings, piercings (notably for labrets for men), necklaces, braclets, etc. You would NOT see the big feathered headdresses associated with Mesoamerican civilizations and Moctezuma in particular: The Aztec did use them, but not very often relative to other garments, not in the way often depicted (they were curved, like Great Plain Indian's feather headdresses) and seemingly mostly in military contexts; nor was it a "crown": The Aztec equivalent to a crown was rather a turquoise mosaic diadem, which you can see in this set of infographs for the typical regalia and dress of royalty. However, noble men DID often wear feather-tassel garments known as Quetzallalpiloni (the Jaguar warrior in the current art actually has one of these which is nice, as some were seemingly built into helmets though a bit of a fanciful one, but it's a game, so that's fine). For hair, men generally had a very distinctive "bowl cut" hairstyle, often with a large tuft or knot on the top, though the presence and style of said knot varied depending on social and military rank. You can see a variety of hairsyles and helmets/martial regalia in this image, but the typical civillian hairstyles and dress are towards the bottom. Women had more common variation in styles, but a variety of bulbous knots and braids such as along the sides were pretty typical. Body and face paint wasn't really used much in general everyday contexts, aside from some women using yellow paint, as that was fashionable.
The main exception to what I noted about hair for men and body/face paint was for priests: Priests often had black paint, and their hair was messy and unwashed (an exception from the normally stringent hygiene norms in Aztec society) caked with dried blood. Priests likewise had a variety of special ornaments and bits of regalia and various ceremonial outfits, much like what you see deities depicted with, but i'm not going to go into this much as A: I'm honestly not that familiar with the variations, function or names of these,other then a shirt/jacket garment known as a Xicolli, and a ceremonial (and perhaps sometimes secular-high status) garment for women known as a Quechquemitl, and B: as the art is now there's no priests shown, though it would make sense for a few to be present... in fact, they may have played ritualistic ball matches in the above getups, based on some pages of the Borgia Codex (though the Borgia is probably not Mexica).
On that note, in regards to the Ball Players: The current Card Art has them more or less wearing the same thing as the spectators (though the person at the bottom of the image in shadow seems to have one of those highly ornamented ceremonial outfits I noted). There's actually not a lot of depictions of Aztec ballplayers, even if you go by Nahuas in general rather then just Mexica, so I actually had to do a bit of research and asking around here. Based on what I was able to find, the few depictions we have (aside from the prior two images of priests in a ritualistic match) seems to just show players with a breechcloth, lacking the hair topknot., with some also showing some sort of hand protector covering the top of their hands.
That second image there (from Duran's History of the Indies of New Spain) also makes it easier to notice something I missed at first (and i'm editing in now), which is that they seem to have an additional skirt garment known as a hip-cloth in Indian Clothing Before Cortes in the first image (you can see another worn by the man on the bottom left in this depiction from the Codex Magliabecchiano), or thigh-waist protector of some kind in the second. I didn't think anything of these initially, as an additional cloth tied around the waist over the breechcloth is just something you see in depictions sometimes and is seemingly just something people wore at times without a clear class or context based association (The only real pattern I see is it tends to get depicted more often with a man who doesn't have a tilmatli on). But, in this second image from Duran, now that i'm looking close, clearly a different kind of garment, seemingly wrapped around each thigh or the waist, with the band of the breechcloth resting above it and likewise the tassels/ends hanging off the breechcloth's knot laid ovein front of it... I really don't know what this is, but in light of it's presence and that seems to be colored the same way as the handguards, I think it's meant to be some sort of protective garb, and perhaps the hip-cloth serves a similar purpose in this context: Some variants of the ball game did use the hips and thighs for hitting the ball, and a waist protector known as a Yoke is common in art of Maya ball players, though Maya Yokes were very different looking and were bigger, thicker, and more complex pieces of equipment.
Accuracy of the Jaguar Warrior art
The Jaguar Warrior, is, aside from the Quetzallalpiloni, almost entirely off. To begin with, the main garment/armor he should be wearing is a Tlahuiztli, this is a "onsie" suit which covered the whole body, from the neck or shoulders down to ankles, and was made of thick cloth, and then a mosiac of thousands of feathers, the different colors arranged to make different patterns, in this case jaguar spots. The colors need not be yellow and such as an actual jaguar, as we have examples of Jaguar patterned tlahuitzli in red, blue and white and potentially other colors. Some sources do suggest that commoners who entered the Jaguar order via merit would have had suits made from actual Jaguar pelts instead, but this isn't consistently stated. The helmet (Cuacalalatli) was made of hardwood, and may have also had feather mosiac coverings and impeded precious stone and metal bits. (Something I think is really neat and would be awesome if it was borrowed for the Humankind art is how the Blue Jaguar tlahuiztli art by Angus Mcbride I linked earlier uses the red and white iconographic symbol for the Jaguars's eye that represent eyes or stars in the Mixteca-Puebla style common in Central-Mesoamerican art),
Technically the Jaguars, and any other soldier with a Tlahuiztli would also have Ichcahuipilli, which is a padded vest or tunic (like Eurasian Gambeson armor) worn under the Tlahuitzli (or alone by mid-ranking soldiers who didn't have Tlahuiztli or the even more prestigious Ehuatl to wear over it) but I don't think it's that important to have the padding be visible bulging up from under the Tlahuitzli or anything; and just felt it was worth noting even it not necessarily relevant to the art. Likewise, while i'd like to note that the Jaguar and Eagle orders were actually the LEAST prestigious of the 4 Mexica knightly orders: The Cuachicqueh or Shorn Ones, seen here in yellow with the mowhawks was the most elite (there were other high ranking titles and positions outside of those 4 orders, some even of higher status, like the Tlacochcalcatl.) and would make a better Emblematic Unit, again, as I said with the emblmatic quarter, I realize that's not changing at this stage of development, and it's not that big a deal.
Aside from the colors and the proportions being a bit wacky and some other fanciful bits, the helmet in the current art is okay, it's within acceptable limits to spice it up for the sake of it being a game, I guess. I'd suggest that the shield pattern be altered to something that was actually used, though: We have dozens of examples of actual shield patterns, which I have linked both Mexica and other Nahua examples of here and here from Armies of the Aztec and Inca Empires, Other Native Peoples of The Americas, and the Conquistadores (which isn't actually that good a source but as a quick reference of shield and banner types it's useful), there's really no need to invent a fake one as the current art does. Shields, or at least the fancier ones used by Jaguars and other high-status soldiers, had either a thick woven reed or hardwood backing and then a padded/thick cloth layer over it, and then feather mosiac to make the pattern, previous stone/gold bits, etc. Shields often had a feather fringe around the edges, and the bottom edge often had leather strips/flaps or feather tassels extending from the bottom.
I'll also link THIS compilation of (mostly) back-mounted banners/standards. I don't think he'd NEED one for the art, but it wouldn't be unusual for a soldier of status like a Jaguar to have one, these were given to higher ranking soldiers or officers/captains of divisions for coordination, like the flags mounted to Japanese Smurai or the crests used by the Romans. Macuahuitl don't usually have engraved patters on them, but that's just me nitpicking, it's fine. Likewise, just as a bonus, you may also want to have some Atlatl darts/arrows held behind the shield, as that's where soldiers stored them, and it's very possible a Jaguar, even if he had a Macuahutil, would also have an atlatl... again, though, this and the Macuahuitl pattern thing aren't big deals.

• The Free, online Aztec Empire Webcomic, which is easily the best telling of the Cortes expediton and the fall of the Aztec, and is meticlously well researched for both narrative and visuals. It relies a lot on using Teotihuacano mural/fresco patterns for Aztec structures, worth noting, but IMO that's an acceptable crutch to lean on, especially when limited to floral and geometric motifs (The Aztec took a lot of influence from Teotihuacano art)

Part Four: Weekly Diary
Day 1 - Wednesday
9:00AM- Wake up and get ready for work. I try to wake up at 8:30AM on most days, but I had a late-night yesterday in Brooklyn attending a Think Olio seminar with some friends about “The Fear of Leisure.” We ended up getting pho afterwards at this amazing place in Greenpoint and spent a while discussing the lecture and what it means to have a balanced lifestyle. I remember to Venmo her for the Uber there ($12), and pick out today’s outfit: Pinky-mauve high-neck chunky wool sweater, tucked into a pair of burgundy windowpane trousers (both from Aritzia), and a pair of platform patent wingtip oxfords from Zara.
10:10AM- Get a reminder email from Amazon that my eBook credit is expiring soon. I bought my Kindle Oasis last year on a whim from an Amazon Bookstore, and it’s my favorite purchase to date. It’s super lightweight, water-resistant, comfortable to hold, and I love taking it to read in cafes and also on flights. I purchase Bad Blood ($11, about the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes' captivating -scam- company Theranos).
12:00PM- I meet up with a friend for our monthly lunch in our favorite cafe. Usually I have lunch with my team (we have a lot of fun personalities in the team and our lunch topics are always entertaining), but it’s nice to switch it up sometimes. She shares some stories about the guy she’s dating who seems very sweet, which makes me really happy. (Company offers free breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and coffee)
5:15PM- J and I leave work and take the train home. We stop by Whole Foods initially to get ingredients for pasta, but it’s too crowded and overwhelming so we head to Morton Williams instead. We pick up rigatoni, vodka sauce, eggplant, onion, french bread, and parmesan ($28 that J covers).
7:00PM- Done cooking dinner! I’ve made an effort to cook at home more this month, and I’ve been really enjoying it so far. I tend to favor Chinese dishes but today we were both craving pasta. We eat while watching an episode of a new anime we recently started (Gintama, recommended by my sister). J got me into anime when we started dating. It’s gotten more mainstream since then, but I never thought I’d love it as much as a I do now in the beginning.
7:45PM- Immediately after dinner, J surprises me with the new Switch Ring Fit Adventure game and sets it up for us to play. We saw an ad for it a few days ago and were really intrigued. According to the game, I “lightly jogged” for about 1 mile, did 36 squats, and 20 knee-to-chests. Would not recommend doing this with a full stomach :D but the adventure part of the game is awesome! Getting around is a lot similar to what I’d think Temple Run would be like in real life, for those who remember how fun and addicting that game was.
9:00PM- I paint my nails with OPI Bubble Bath after showering. Gel manicures are in my past (used to get them every 3-4 weeks), but ever since moving to NYC, the ~$45 after tip just didn’t seem worth it anymore. To all the gals who do their own nails at home-- SECHE VITE IS LIFE-CHANGING!!! I use their base and top coat and my manicure lasts me 2-3 weeks without chipping if I use OPI or Butter London polish.
10:00PM - This is when the shameful me comes out. I am pretty sure I have a shopping addiction. It’s very confusing in the sense that no, I’m not building credit card debt and still “reasonably living within my means,” but I realize the amount of money I spend on fashion is sickening. Growing up, my dad was extremely strict and didn’t allow me to wear makeup or buy clothes I wanted because he thought they would “distract me” from the more important things in life… mainly following the typical Asian-American life-track: excel in school and extracurricular activities, ace the SAT, get accepted to a prestigious college to study a lucrative major -> get a lucrative job. I resented him for taking away my freedom to do *anything* (couldn’t hang out with friends, date, go to prom, etc.), but I’ve come to terms with his parenting in a weird the-end-justifies-the-means” way. I am grateful to have this amount of financial privilege. But sometimes I feel like I’m making up for lost time. I’ve always loved makeup and fashion from sneak-watching videos on Youtube in between SAT practice tests. The 2010-ish Youtube era were full of girls who constantly uploaded videos of shopping hauls. I remember thinking how amazing it would be to be able to buy anything I wanted. Once I started working in college, that’s what I did. Now, living in NYC and following amazing Instagram fashion bloggers really eat up my self-control, but also constantly remind me of the years I wanted to feel fashionable and beautiful but couldn’t. This is a super long rant, and I know it does not justify me spending so much money on frivolous things, but… it is a problem for me, and I constantly feel guilty for wasting money I know I should be saving. The guilt and self-hatred is not enough to stop browsing and shopping, so the cycle continues. I purchase an Isabel Marant Etoile sweatshirt ( $140 on sale, but still not justified), and think about an adorable cozy LoveShackFancy cardigan which is... $495.
11:00PM- Browse some Youtube videos and head to bed.

Day 2 - Thursday
10:20AM- Get to work later than I wanted. I haven’t felt motivated for the past week, especially when I’m not working on something coding-heavy (usually how I measure my productivity). I’m also feeling demoralized about work right now, because this week we got back performance reviews, and even though I finished a somewhat impactful project within 4 months of joining the company/team, I didn’t get the feedback that my manager said I would if I did.
11:10AM- My manager brings out this week bread from a bakery on Grand Street, and he says they gave him the wrong bread. It turned out to be the best! Raisins and walnuts yum.
12:00PM- Lunch! Today an engineer visiting another office joins us. I get bok choy, tofu, and eggplant from a cafe.
4:00PM- I get a message from a friend who recently moved to LA. Her boyfriend contacted a bunch of us last week to send in clips wishing her happy birthday, and she just received the video. I’m super happy that she loved it, and that she’s scheduled to come visit for a week next month!
6:00PM- Get off work and take the E train to Saks. I’m meeting up with my friend’s fiance to browse the fall/winter collections. This is my first time hanging out with her-- my friend mentioned that she’s also very into designer things and I always love companions to share my indulgent designer cravings :P To be honest, I’m hoping I won’t find anything that catches my eye because I already splurged on my “yearly treat” to myself on a vintage Cartier watch earlier this year when I got my new job, and I’m just constantly buying clothes too.
7:00PM- We browse around all the boutiques but didn’t find a bag that she loved. Then, we head up to the 8th floor for shoes (my fav) and… WOW I found the most amazing pair of Chanel boots. They’re gold, mid-height heeled combat-ish boots with the classic Chanel black cap-toe design. I made the mistake of trying them on and it took everything for me to not cave and purchase them. $1450 is steep for a pair of boots that I know will get scuffed and ruined so easily… but wow, they’re beautiful and the saleswoman was great at her job haha.
8:00PM- We grab some sushi at a restaurant nearby ($48) and chat about bags, her upcoming wedding, relationships, and work. I love getting to know new people, and felt like we got along really well.
10:00PM- My cat comes to cuddle with me on the couch, and I suspect it’s because I’m using his favorite blanket. We adopted him from an ASPCA truck two years ago, and it was the best decision ever. He has such a funny personality and always brightens our day. I start reading Ali Wong’s new book and head to bed after.

Day 3 - Friday Hooray!
9:00AM- I had the weirdest dream yesterday… I think alien (?) attack, and then somehow I got out of a plane mid-air and they tried to rotate the plane to shake me off and I had to keep maneuvering clockwise around the wings to stay on the right side of gravity if that makes sense haha. But wow what an exhausting dream. Today I chose to wear a thick fuzzy black cardigan with gold stars over a white tee, high-rise straight leg denim, a black belt, and Golden Goose hi-stars.
11:40AM- Coffee/latte time. Usually I prefer oat milk, but I only really like Planet Oat’s extra creamy which not a lot of places use. I check my email and yay another item from my recent Thredup box has sold, and now I have a total of $40 credit from this box. I discovered Thredup when they started sponsoring a lot of Youtubers. I found out that they provide shipping labels for free, and it’s essentially the same as selling your clothes to Buffalo Exchange, but way less of a hassle. Granted they pay a lot less for each item, but these days I’m really lazy about listing my pieces on eBay/Poshmark/going into Buffalo Exchange, so sending clothes to sell at Thredup is the superior option over just donating stuff to a local Goodwill.
1:15PM- Late lunch today because I wasn’t hungry. Head to a cafe with a juice bar to get a mix of green juice and ginger shot, and grab a PB&J sandwich to go.
2:00PM- Work offers a lot of cool events, and today I’m signed up for a Japanese tea ceremony and tasting. I head down to attend with a friend, and I eat the best mochi I’ve ever had.
4:00PM- One of my teammates got his promotion!!! We’re all very excited for him and chat a bit about what he’s planning to do for celebration.
6:15PM- Leave work to take the train to Costco with J, my friend and his fiance C (my new friend hehe), who has a Costco membership! I haven’t been to Costco for almost two years so I’m super excited.
7:10PM- We eat dinner at Costco because it’s convenient and also just an insanely good deal. J and I combined get two slices of combo pizza, a chicken bake, a churro, and a diet Pepsi (Costco needs to get out of that partnership and get Coke instead, let’s be real), and the total was only $9.62!! (J pays). We eat in the food court, and talk about how J is the only one who really should be eating 1000+ calories since he runs daily.
8:30PM- Costco closes, and we finish shopping. J and I came mostly for entertainment, but we still managed to buy Alaskan cod, golden kiwi, an umbrella, chicken thighs ($10 for 10 lbs of chicken, crazy deal), salami, and contact solution. We uber back home after ($22, J pays). I venmo my friend who paid for everything with his Costco card ($76).
10:25PM- Finish shower and get ready for bed. I browse TJ Maxx (discount/outlet type store for designer brands), my biggest guilty pleasure. Their contemporary line is my favorite because sometimes they carry pieces from my favorite brands like La Maison Tullah, Vince, Theory, and recently Rebecca Taylor! They also regularly have OPI nail polishes for $4. I look through today’s new arrivals and spot this amazing pair of Joe’s lamb leather cropped bootcut pants. I have the Aritzia faux leather Daria leggings, but I’ve been on the hunt for a pair of genuine leather pants, and these are perfect and exactly what I’m looking for. In my cart, I already had this cute polka dot puff-sleeve sweater from Rebecca Taylor, but I move it to “Save-for-later” to make “room” for the pants. I purchase the pants and a faux leather headband with my TJ Maxx credit card which gives 5% cash back (through rewards) for purchases made within the TJX family ($192).

Day 4 - Saturday
9:00AM- Wake up and start pack for spa day in New Jersey! I bring my Kindle, journal, and makeup and jewelry to put on later. I choose a DL1961 washed black denim jacket (that @somethingnavy/Arielle Charnas sold me on) to go over a flowy light blue patterned midi dress from last season Zara, and a pair of Golden Goose superstars to wear for the day.
10:00AM- Head out to New Jersey. Last week, I purchased admission tickets to a sauna + spa place in Jersey for J and me. J offered to rent a Zipcar for a whole day so we can drive there, and then to the Queen’s International Night Market which we’ve been meaning to go to this whole summer, and today’s its last day.
11:00AM- Get to the sauna and spa to check in. This business is relatively new, so the design felt very sleek and modern compared to more traditional spas. I signed up for a 30 minute full body scrub ($55, J treats), and wait for my appointment in a Japanese Herbal bath.
1:30PM- I grab a green juice and continue reading Ali Wong’s book in the cozy lounge area. I love feeling warm and zen ($6, J treats).
4:00PM- Leave the spa and browse in a huge supermarket that is right next to the spa. Suburban supermarkets are the best because they have the square footage to carry so much more variety than the ones in the city. We pick up some snacks and a huge bag of rice since we had the Zipcar ($53, J covers).
4:30PM- We head out to pick up our friends who live in Long Island City (and meet their cat!). It’s about an hour and 15 minute drive, but felt manageable as J and I talk about random topics. Traffic wasn’t as bad as we expected on a weekend, so that was a plus :)
6:30PM- Arrive at the Queen’s Night Market! It was a bit chilly at night, but the food was incredible and affordable. We got popcorn chicken, bubble tea, potato crisps, takoyaki, waffle-wrapped mochi, peking duck bao, and lamb skewers ($43).
8:30PM- It starts drizzling a little, and the four of us decide to go to Flushing for dessert. We drive and find parking, and I pay for the 2 hours of parking (praise Flushing: $4).
9:30PM- I share a green tea crepe cake and a lemongrass ginger carrot herbal tea with J, and our friends share fruit crepe tea and jasmine tea. The boys split the bill (J pays $20).
11:30PM- We return the Zipcar successfully! At home, I wind down and put on an Origins charcoal mask for some skin detox.

Day 5 - Sunday
10:00AM- Wake up to the rain outside. I really love rainy/gloomy days; they have a calming effect on me, and make staying indoors extra cozy. I’m curled up on my couch with a soft blanket, watching the rain, and planning the day. Laundry needs to be done, which reminds me I have to stock up our laundry items. I order Tide Plus Bleach, fabric softener dryer sheets, and another fabric softener for pieces we hang dry from Target. I also throw in probiotic capsules to try them out, and a pack of 6 crew socks as the weather gets colder and I don’t want my ankles to freeze ($51).
10:15AM- Make an iced oat milk latte with the Planet Oat extra creamy (as mentioned before hehe it's the best), and a Vietnamese coffee mix. It’s delicious. I do some online browsing and find a gorgeous metallic bronze blazer which would be perfect for upcoming holiday parties, but I resist successfully whew. I also bookmark a Chinti and Parker sweater with a fun rainbow print to consider for later…
11:05AM- I head down the hall to the laundry room on our floor and start two loads. It's $3.60 total, but we have a prepaid card for laundry. J tells me he can take care of the drying cycle and folding since I'm going out later. I guess this is an appropriate time to talk about how amazing J is! We've been dating for a little over three years now, and he's been the most caring, thoughtful, funny and kind boyfriend I've ever had. He's always looking out for ways to make me comfortable and happy (biggest example is when he refills my water bottle at home without me asking... idk what to tell you, I drink a lot of water haha, and also just taking care of a lot of household tasks too-- especially cleaning the litter box!). He makes me feel so loved, and I cherish our relationship so much. I know without a doubt that he's "my person." :)
1:00PM- I love wearing bright colors on gloomy days, so I chuck on a chunky yellow high neck mohair sweater from Zara and a pair of Levi’s wedgie icon denim. I meet a friend to check out the newly opened Nordstrom near Columbus Circle. She got a promotion this week, and wanted to treat herself to some nice boots. Before we meet up, I pick out a maple coconut donut from the ultra-cute Nordstrom food court to congratulate her with ($3). Shopping was a success! I find her a pair of Acne Jensen dupes (the Marc Fisher Yale booties), and also AGL pointed suede block heel booties. Both look amazing on her, but she decides to only get the lower heel Marc Fisher ones for now, since the AGL ones are higher and tighter on the heel which we agreed would look good with straight leg denim, a style that she doesn’t yet own. We also saw some CDG Converse high-tops that are sold out everywhere, so I had to get them ($146)! We head upstairs to look at denim and I also successfully found her a pair of Reformation straight leg denim that look awesome on her, and AGOLDE Riley jeans, my favorite. She loves them both and splurges, and I feel very accomplished as a crazy shopping-enthusiast/enabler :P.
3:15PM- We head out to meet two other friends to see Hustlers! I’ve been wanting to see it for a while, so I’m super excited. J. Lo and Constance Wu?! I still remember when movie tickets were $8… not anymore ($18)! We split the largest bucket of popcorn which was delicious ($3).
5:30PM- Hustlers was such a fun watch, and we see an advertisement for Parasite as we head down to the lobby, which I recommend everyone to see as well. I love movies, and I probably should sign up for the AMC Stubs A-List… Anyway, we decide to go to Bibble and Sip to hang out for a bit longer, and I get a Matcha Jasmine latte, and an earl grey chocolate chip cookie for everyone to share ($9).
6:00PM- I start heading home and call J if he wanted me to pick up anything for dinner. Usually I cook on Sunday nights, but this weekend has been super busy (but full of adventures!). He’s craving McDonalds so I pickup a Quarter Pounder and 20 pieces McNuggets for him ($16 but who remembers when 20 piece was only $5).
6:30PM- I get home, and J has finished building the new coffee table from Wayfair that I purchased last week! It’s one that can lift up to table-height, and it's already so much more amazing than the one we currently have from West Elm, which is super aesthetic but completely non-functional. I think this new table fits in our space a lot better as well, especially since the color of the wood and metal structured legs match our CB2 bookshelf perfectly. I’ve been really impressed with Wayfair pieces, and also purchased a rug from them before. I eat some nuggets with J as we watch another episode of Gintama.
8:00PM- I watch some Youtube videos and talk with J as he packs a duffle bag for his business trip to California this week.

Day 6 - Monday
8:15AM- Wake up, and finally back on my regular schedule. I peel and slice a huge korean pear that J and I got on Saturday from the supermarket in Jersey for J and myself (it’s delicious). I get ready for work and put on yet another chunky knit, straight leg denim, and glittery bronze Aquazzura pointed-toe mules that make my heart sing. J and I take the train together, as he’s leaving to JFK later from work for his trip.
9:30AM- Grab my usual soy latte and fill up my 30oz Yeti mug with warm water. I try to drink two of those throughout the work day. As I catch up on emails, I found out a team that I did some work for last week thanked me for a “speedy investigation and implementation.” This really makes my day, and motivates me to work hard this week.
11:00AM- Officially the start of my oncall rotation this week. Being “oncall” is essentially getting paged whenever there’s an issue regarding our services that gets escalated through auto-monitoring. Last time I was oncall, I got a page around 1:30AM on a Saturday which I responded to and investigated/addressed the issue. At my previous company, we were expected to be oncall all the time, and weren’t paid for it, so this weekly rotation schedule + compensation for the 24/7 monitoring is pretty good to me.
11:50AM- Lunch with my team. I make a salad with spinach, roasted carrots, sweet potato, and cucumbers. We chat about our weekends and our coworker’s upcoming wedding which we’re all invited to. After lunch, we head down a few floors to grab coffee/juice. I get a green juice (celery, kale, swiss chard, cucumber), with a dash of the “spooky ginger shot” (cranberry juice, ginger, apple cider).
12:40PM- I suddenly remembered that the bundle of dance classes I bought last month were expiring on the 31st and I still had one left, so I book a contemporary class for 7:30PM tomorrow after work. So excited!
6:40PM- Oops still at work. This afternoon I got swamped with so much work, some related to being oncall AKA becoming the “go-to person” for any issue/question, and some from my manager who I had a 1:1 with earlier and thinks I’m ready to take on more responsibilities.
7:10PM- I wrap up, grab some food (salad again) from work, and head home!
7:40PM- Finally get home, feed my cat, take off my makeup, and eat while watching The Mindy Project.
10:00PM- Video chat my grandma. I’m really close to my grandparents because I spent more of my childhood with them than I did with my parents. I feel bad because once I went to college and then started working, I contacted them less and less… I just want to make the most of our time left together.

Day 7 - Tuesday
8:00AM- Wake up and watch the newly uploaded Sheerluxe (UK online fashion/lifestyle magazine that also makes Youtube videos) show. They are discussing event-wear in this episode, which reminds me I still need to pick out outfits for the two holiday work parties J and I have. I fall in love with what Katie Holmes wore to the Nordstrom Party: a black Saint Laurent ruched silk mini dress paired with sheer polka dot tights and black pointed pumps, and decide to order a pair of sheer polka dot tights from Nordstrom ($40).
9:15AM- Get to work and feel a little overwhelmed with all the things I need to work on, but I'm feeling extra motivated because I like being productive. I grab my soy latte, fill my Yeti mug with water, and start the day.
11:35AM- My team want to go to lunch earlier today but since I’m not hungry and have a lot to do, I skip out and think I’ll just grab something small later.
2:00PM- I went too late for green juice, so I got a smoothie instead with almond milk, spinach, and a banana. I also make a quick salad to-go.
5:40PM- Early dinner with a friend. We get in line for burrito bowls; I get spinach, chicken, and pico de gallo, and then get back to work.
7:15PM- I should be heading out to make it to my dance class, but I really want to stay and try to figure out a production rollout issue… I decide to stay at work and just forfeit the credit.
8:00PM- Ok, this week has not been a good work-life balance. It’s definitely also because J is away, and he usually reminds me to take breaks, and leave work at a regular hour. There’s just an endless amount of things to do at work, and I like getting things done.
9:00PM- I start The Politician on Netflix! What an interesting show… I watched Dear Evan Hansen with my mom and sister last year, and I love seeing Ben Platt and Laura Dreyfuss playing completely different roles. As I watch, I browse Leandra Medine + Mango collaboration, and consider a sweater. The colors make me really happy, but I know I need to buy a dress for the holiday party soon, so I resist.

Reflection
This was overall a normal week for me, with the exception of going out shopping with friends twice! I usually do most of my shopping online, and this week I tagged along with friends who were looking for specific things. The CDG converse were definitely an impulse purchase, but they are so comfortable and cute so... no regrets :P. I am aware I need to reign in my shopping habits, and stop mindlessly online browsing so often, because I know I will always find something I like. I haven't read many diaries that capture buying clothes/shoes on the regular, and feel like I would get ripped to shreds if I posted this on R29 for wasting money so here I am. :D
Also!!! So exciting to see so many women in tech on this sub! I just read the diary of the SWE in seattle, and Ohio diarist going through coding bootcamp :D
