My friend and I got ourselves into modern board games together, and while we'll play each others' games, we don't have a lot of overlap in terms of what we both get really excited about.

Yllien likes longer, more complex games like Alchemists, Agricola, Five Tribes, and Keyflower. Biblios and Istanbul are exceptions to that rule.
Bears likes shorter and simpler games like Coup, Codenames, and Once Upon a Time. Active socializing and/or mindgames in games is a huge plus, and any word game is also a huge plus - Scrabble, Boggle. Exceptions to the simple games are Chess and Dominion.
So far, the best compromises we've found are:
Above and Below - Satisfies Yllien's more complex mechanics, and Bears likes the exploring/story aspect.
Coup - Bears likes the social deduction, Yllien also likes it but isn't sure why.
Chess - We played this before modern board games. The fact that there are no external forces like luck, and every single move you make is in direct reaction to your opponent, made it great. Satisfies both mind games and complexity. Mostly played out between us, haven't found a great replacement.
Yllien hates games with high luck / low skill ceilings, co-ops, as well as "mean" games. Bears hates typical worker placement / resource management / economics and will typically get bored around 30 minutes of any single game. Both prefer interactivity and dislike downtime. Least favorite modern games: Smash Up, Castle Panic, Boss Monster, 7 Wonders, Race for the Galaxy, Agricola.
We usually play with 1-2 other people that are less discriminating about games, so we're looking for a game that plays well with 3 or 4.
TLDR: 45 minute or less competitive game with low luck, and lots of depth and skill, no worker placement / economic games, and plays well with 3 or 4 people.

Who's the "Alison" who coined "meeple"?

I looked up the meaning of "meeple" today. I always thought it meant people who go to churches because of a hand game (that has a part that goes "here comes the meeple" or something whose name I can't remember). Turns out it means people-shaped pieces, though I've always heard this being referred to as pawns (e.g. the player tokens in Quoridor have been referred to as pawns in my experience even though looking the word up, it should only refer to the pawns of chess). Online sources claim the term "meeple" was coined by an Alison. So who's this Alison? Are they some influential figure (like an internet person with a lot of following or something) or just a random person whose term happened to get popular?

Toronto Board Game Folks - Help!

Hey everyone,
I'm currently looking for 2 board games in Toronto and I'm not sure where to find them. My searches for an online distributor (that will ship to canada) of either has failed and no games in the downtown area seem to stock them. Any tips as to where I might find them would be awesome!

Quoridor - A German (?) board game that has a wood board, 4 pegs and 20 "walls" that are used. It's a fantastic game, but I can't seem to find anyone who sells it in the city!
Mancala - A traditional African game that involves moving stones around a (wooden?) board. Easy to learn, tough to master. For this one I'm interested in a decent quality wooden board and nice stones.

tldnr: help me find somewhere to buy these games! (for a reasonable price)

This is a Google Play Games enabled version of the boardgame Quoridor, a socalled turnbased abstract strategy game.
The game takes place on a 9x9 grid and every turn a player has the option to move their pawn one space, or place a wall (through which pawns may not move). The goal is to reach the opposite side before your opponent(s) do. Strategic placement of walls should preferrably hurt your opponent while not hurting you.
Currently the game is in open Alpha test, but it's playable just fine.
